They kind of swapped metals. The same sort of thing seems to happen with 18th century England, quite oddly. The great recoinage of 1696 was intended to put England on a silver standard for coinage. Yet it seems that by 1697 merchants were already preferentially importing gold and exporting silver. There seems to be a similar situation going on between Bahmanids and Vijayanagar in late medieval India.
