The other coin I won at Agora was this tiny AE10 from Assos. What caught my attention and ultimately made me bid on it was the reverse and the detail on such a small flan. Maybe I just haven't paid much attention, but this is the first coin from Assos that I can remember seeing. If you have any others, please feel free to post them on this thread. I would be very interested. TROAS, ASSOS AE10 OBVERSE: Helmeted head of Athena left REVERSE: AΣ-ΣI, Bucranium Struck at Assos 400-300 BC 1.18 g, 10.2 mm SNG Cop 241; BMC 8
A very nice coin, Bing! I have no coins of Assos, but found an example of your type at acsearch.info: http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1928932
very nice indeed, athena and the skull both look great...and on a very small patch of real estate. lovely color also.
That's a super example, Bing. Nice score. In case you didn't already know, your coin was previously sold at auction here: http://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=218540 Assos's small bronze issues seem to be scarcer than their silver ones, if not altogether rare, but those like yours that show the bucranium are less commonly seen than the coins that have the griffin, which may have been the city's badge. Mine was from a mixed lot, is in pretty awful shape, and for awhile I didn't even know I was looking at a griffin, or that the coin was from Assos. TROAS, Assos. AE11. Athena / Griffin. SNG Cop 235 var (control).
I stand corrected. You're not the only one with a coin of Assos. Well, it was nice while it lasted, all 21 minutes.
I did not know it was ex CNG. According to the link, the owner lost money when he/she sold it. Well, the 21 minutes of fame was enough for me. I was beginning to get a big head. Thanks all for the compliments.
Bravo, big bro!! => man, that's an über-cool animal coin ... => I'm totally jealous of your sweet lil' Assos, my friend!! ... Z-bro, your example is also amazingly awesome (great coins, fellas)
