Tonight it was 1925-D, 1942-D, 1952-D, 1957-D, and 1959-D pennies; 1953 and 1957 nickels and the find of the night: a dateless buffalo nickel. This is the fourth buffalo that I've found in the last few months and today was the third workday in a row that I've made spectacular finds (I found an Indian head penny on Sunday and a silver 1964 dime on Monday.)
Tonight I found 1959-D, 1960-D, and 1970-S small date pennies; 1940 and 1959-D nickels; 1971-D and 1980-P half dollars, and an 1987 Canadian penny. A regular who knows I am into coins came in the store and said "I have something for you..." and handed me a 1985 Mexican 100 peso coin, which was very nice of the guy. A couple of hours later, another regular customer who knows I collect came in and gave me a grungy 1937 buffalo nickel. The reverse was nasty and had black gunk on it, so I soaked it in my infamous grill cleaner. It got much of the gunk off, revealing major scratches where somebody tried to brutally clean it by scrubbing it with an abrasive, so I didn't feel so bad that I cleaned the gunk off. Some of our customers suck, but some of them are great, and tonight proved it. Tonight was the second night in a row that I took a buffalo nickel home.
Circulated coins that were once common being Chinese fakes? I seriously doubt it. For real. Why would somebody fake a 1940 nickel and add faux patina to it? Doesn't make sense. I haven't found anything that is worth much more than face except for some Franklin halves (which aren't worth THAT much more than melt) and a 1979 wide rim SBA dollar coin.
I didn't make any spectacular finds like I did earlier in the week tonight. I spotted 1928-S, 1940, and 1957-D wheat pennies; a 1951 nickel; and a 1998 Canadian penny.
Tonight all I found were a few '50s nickels but a regular customer came in and paid for his $8 bill with a $100 and told me to keep the change. I said "but this is a hundred" and he said " know. I just got back from the casino" so he must have won at least a couple thousand dollars. Does this qualify for find of the year?
I cheated again and went to the coin shop for some pennies. I bought a 1858 flying eagle, and 1920, 1920-S, 1921, 1926, 1926-S, 1928, 1936-D, 1937-D, 1939, and 1940-D wheat pennies.
Lately I've found several nickels: 1947, 1952-D, 1957 (2), 1959-D (2). I also got a series 1957A $1 silver certificate, which a customer paid for his gas with. This is the second or third silver certificate I've found so far at work.
This is my first flying eagle penny. I didn't find this one in circulation, I got it at the local coin shop.
This morning's graveyard shift provided me with some pennies and a nickel. The pennies were 1950-D and 1957-D wheat pennies, 1959-D, 1960-D, 1964-D (AU), and a 1970-S that appears to be a large date. I also found a 1959-D nickel and a 1999 Canadian penny.
I worked graveyard and pulled a few coins out of rolls, but nobody spent any interesting coins. I found 1946 and 1951-S wheat pennies and a real Cold War relic, a 1950 West German 2 pfennig coin. I pulled the Bundesrepublik Deutschland coin out of a roll of plain old pennies, despite the Teutonic coin being slightly larger than an American penny.
Over the last few days, I've found 1937-D, 1950-D, 1955-D. 1956, 1959-D, 1960-D (5), 1968-S, and 1970-S pennies; 1940, 1946-S, 1956, 1957-D, 1960-D (2), and 1960 nickels; an off center struck dime of unknown vintage; 1994-D and 1997-D halves; a 1971-D Ike; 1979-D and 1980-S SBA dollars; Canadian pennies from 1973, 1980, and 1992; and Canadian nickels from 1956 and 2000.
Today I didn't work the register much, but I was able to spot three wheat pennies: a 1944-D, a 1952, and a 1955-D.
I haven't found a lot lately, hence the lack of updates. What I did find was: * 1944, 1945, 1959, 1959-Dx2, 1960-Dx5, 1960-S, and 1970-S large date pennies * 1942, 1946, 1959-D, and 1960-Dx2 nickels * 1971-D half dollar * 1947 (with King George on the obverse) and 1976 Canadian pennies * 2013 Canadian quarter * Filipino piso (can't remember the date) * 2006 Bahamian cent * Series 1974 $1 bill (in good condition for its age) * Series 2009 star note
