I was thinking this would happen. That eventually the gold buffalo's would be broken down into a 1/10th , 1/4 and 1/2 ounce sizes like the American Eagle. I purchased a one ounce Gold proof west mint buffalo several years ago, primarily because I thought it wouldn't be commercialized like the AM eagle. I wonder if this will make the 1 oz buffalo's increase or decrease in value? The gold buffalo is one beautiful coin.

I find that really stupid (assuming they plan on continuing to mint the AGE as well). I think all we really need is one series of gold bullion coins...but the mint is in the business of selling coins. Although, I personally like the Buffalo design better than the AGE.

I'll bet it won't be long until we see 4 different silver bullion designs per yer. Lets see...I'm thinking, standard ASE, Morgan Dollar, Barber Head, and...Seated Liberty.

The gold Buffs were created for one reason, to satisfy the desires of US buyers who wished to purchace 24 karat gold coins (the Buffs) instead of 22 karat gold coins (the AGE).

It was purely a way for the US Mint to compete with other world mints, nothing else.

OK, I didn't realize the Buffs and the AGEs were a different purity of gold. I just assumed that the mint was making yet another collector piece to sell (seems to be their thing lately). But, now that you mention it...I remember when the first Buffalo gold came out the big deal was it was .9999 fine gold...so that makes sense.

Still, would be be surprised to see them selling 4 different silver bullion coins at some point in the future?

    1 oz Gold BUFFS

Okay, okay, but what about a little protection fund because the market and CD interest rates stink. Long term gold gains value always. Can't say that for the dollar. Amer. 1 oz gold buff, AGB, may not be a collectors dream coin but will still be desired in any quality, CIRC., UNC., BU, ETC.
Would really like your opinions not you condemnations. zg

What have I let myself in for?!!

This is my opinion, most collectors feel that the bullion coins are just a hunk of precious metal - not even real coins.

This is not an opinion, nor is it a condemnation - merely facts. As it is, only a few of them, gold, silver or platinum, have any numismatic value at all. There is a small collector base out there of people who do collect these coins. And it is that small base that keeps what premiums there are in place.

But what happens if that base fades away ? As little as 10 years ago it didn't even exist. And the majority of those people who make up that base have only been collecting a short time. And they tend to drift away once they discover that most coin dealers, and most collectors, really don't want anything to do with the bullion coins. And then they start collecting coins that were actually used in circulation.

I can also tell you this, values for the slabbed bullion coins were higher in 2002 than they are now (excepting bullion content). Prices have been falling steadily for 6 years.

    Gold Buffalo 1 Oz Bullion

Thanks for the advice. I was getting confused on what everybody on CT was here for. I'LL improve the quality of my collection rather than the quantity. Much more fullfilling and enjoyable,...once I know what I'm doing. zg

You collect what you want to collect and what makes you feel happy. I used to torment myself for a long time about collecting "bullion" coins and modern coins. I used to worry whether or not they will have any value down the road. I used to worry what people would think. I used to worry about worrying. Now, I just don't care. I love the coins so I collect them. Just this year, I decided to sell off all my AGEs and purchase the AGBs because I just love the design. I hope I am fortunate to continue to collect these, but if not, I will just move onto something else.

I will tell you why I am on CT..... I am here to share my passion for coins with fellow members who feel the same way and learn a thing or two along the way. I believe I have done all that and will continue to do so. Hopefully, you will feel the same way. Good luck.

For whatever it's worth Zeke, I used to collect them too, all the gold and silver. But I did because I liked them. Only ones I ever made money on were '95-W set and the gold. Only reason I made money on the gold was because when I bought most of them, gold was under $300 oz.
