I've also been wanting to add an Alexander 'the Great' coin to my collection, and did so this year. I like the plow in the left of the field on the reverse. Kingdom of Macedon, Alexander III AR Tetradrachm. Tarsos, circa 327-323 BC. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ (ALEXANDROU = ALEXANDER) Zeus Aëtophoros (eagle bearer) seated left, holding scepter
Great stuff everyone...thanks for playing along. I haven't stopped working on the Bag o Romans and will have to post all of the attributed coins to one thread at some point...but that's for another thread!
Bucket list - that's a good one. I had to look it up, English not being my mother tongue. But the notion helps me deciding to what I should aspire. I have been interested in Sasanians since I was 16 years old, those Bahram II drachms with a triple portrait were always on my bucket list, but - too expensive. They are not so rare, but interesting, and there are many varieties. Today there were a few in the CNG auction. I bid on two, the sleepy-eyed family and the sprightly three - more worn, but missed them both. Well - I spent half a lifetime aspiring... maybe next time.
Lol, I was wondering where the "sleepy eyed family" term came from. You are correct. The coins are not really rare as a type, there are MANY different types, but as one of the most beautiful and interesting types of the entire Sassanid series they are always in demand, especially in high grade. I only own about 6, but know someone who has about 150 and still buys when he sees them. One thing about "bucket list" coins is patience. As you grow older, increased pay and reductions in bills enables you to afford more of them. This type was on my bucket list for years, but now I have them. I never thought I would own a Cleopatra VII portrait coin, but now I have 6 unique types. Life will let you get these pricier coins later.
