Thats a great post Ed. Thanks. I never saw this on Kuenker (but I was not looking hard beyond their auction.) Interesting the first "lifelike" portraits were the Satraps vs. the Shah.
@Blake Davis ... Found another Bruttium with the Dioscuri... a little unusual with the puffy faces... since they enjoyed mischief, perhaps they tangled with a BEES NEST??? Bruttium Lokri Ephizephyrii 350-330 BC AE19 4.29g Jugate Hds Diskouroi - Zeus seatd holding patera scepter cornucopiae SNG ANS 583 SNG Cop 1895 ACSearch only had one listed, but Auctions do not typically offer lower-end AE coins.
Interesting coin - I will be looking for these - is there any numismatic literature that focuses on the bronzes of Bruttium? I recall reading that a comprehensive work on the ancient bronzes of Sicily took three volumes! Blake
I have Sear/Seaby Greek Coins and Their Values (among other books for my various specialties); I review ACSearch; WildWinds; and GNC as I hone in on coins... There are several Numis Books out there that focus on various areas and time periods - (@Valentinian has several, I also search on Vcoins, Amazon, etc.) I really do not collect from a Numismatic approach, rather I collect from a History approach, then flesh out / expand coins representing those periods in History that excites me. I then either on-line search/research and/or buy books/catalogs that help me with a certain area. Others may chime in to point you to some great reference books. This is my favorite for my Carthage Collection:
