I picked this up at a local auction(Here) and it showed up yesterday. we have a large family of Ptolemy collectors and i know we just had a posting. so please post up your herd.. My new Ptolemy ll Philadephos 283 -246 BC. Ae31, Obv. Zeus facing right. Rev. Eagle standing on thunderbolt, with a bunch of Greek letters. This bad boy is 31mm x 23g. Choc patina with dark red highlights.( stole the image from JA) To add to this, my big boy.. Ptolemy lll, Euergetes..246-221 BC Ae42, Obv. Zeus head right. Rev. Eagle standing on thunderbolt. 42mm x 71g.
Besides the two I have had for quite a while, I haven't been able to add to my 'hoard'---although I still throw in a bid or two....maybe next month?? Love those massive dudes!!
Nice big chunks of metal around here, folks. Just two of them here, not currently a focus though, I might very well part with them someday... Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemee II Head of Zeus right PTOLEMAIOY BASILEOS, eagle left, shield in field 17.29 gr, 27 mm Ref : Sear #7779 Ptolemaic Kingdom, Ptolemee IV - Head of Zeus right PTOLEMAIOY BASILEOS, eagle left, cornucopia in field 36.11 gr, 34 mm Ref : Sear #7841 Q
I am very unhappy with mine. As much as I feed it, the weight refuses to go up. Ptolemy II AE46 90.07g but I know one of our gentle members has a heavier one.
Try mineral supplements like zinc and copper. Your Ptolemy is inorganic and won't respond well to typical pet food.
I should make a tray of mine... @dougsmit wow that's a heavy one! So is that number two here? I'm glad you got that @Eng I was tempted...but this time of year coins aren't the primary focus. Ptolemy II A smaller 17mm PII Ptolemy IV Somewhat smaller Ptolemy IV Hmm...can't find my PIII... I would love to get a silver Ptolemy but they're a little out of my budget.
Okay EGYPT, Alexandria. Ptolemy II Philadelphus 285-246 BCE AE 48 mm, 91.8 gm Obv: laureate head of Zeus Ammon right Rev: eagle standing left on thunderbolt looking right, wings partly spread, E monogram between eagle's legs Ref: Sear 7782, Svoronos 446 ex Professor James Eaton Collection Same coin with a 5 mm Macedonian fractional:
There are plenty of Ptolemy Tetradrachms under $200. Even some under $150, and a quick search shows even a couple under $100. Not so bad, but I guess it really depends on the budget and expectations. Not to mention, just ask for a discount. You never know until you ask! The one above I posted cost me $475, but all these years later I dont know why. I must had entered a bid of $175 for hit the 4 instead. I really dont know.
