Here we get dinged 13% duty. I have gotten everything via mail in safe and sound. They just mark "numismatic tokens" no value/ gift. However with couriers (FEDEX) you will get your coins in 3 days but end up paying $800+ duties. I would rather wait 3 weeks and pay 0:happy: Like Donna said/ it also prevents stuff going MIA.;)

I'm impressed that you were even able to find a live person to talk to at DHL. I don't believe that there's any customer service number at their website that allows you to get to anything but the usual computerized answers; even the customer service "chat" is with a computer. The one time I really had to speak to a live person (when a package shown as delivered had not actually been delivered), it took me about an hour, and several different levels of computerized responses, to get to someone. The person promised to open an investigation, but the next day I got the package anyway from someone to whom it had been delivered in a different building. The driver read the building number wrong on the package.

But every other time -- except for the one time a package went from Spain to Cincinnati to Spain to New York City! -- things have worked fine with DHL. I've received packages in NYC less than 48 hours after placing the order with a UK dealer. As with most places, everything's fine until it isn't.

I had the same problem with Naumann/ DHL. So. I told them to send in future via mail. MDC/ Monaco also insists on using courier service. I am their client, so they better send my material my way/ or I will never deal with them in future. Rauch/ also in Austria are super nice to deal with/ they send all shipments via Austrian priority post.

:D Sounds like I got lucky. Hopefully I won't have to repeat the process again. Sounds like them wasting resources and taking packages on extended world tours isn't uncommon, so if it happens again I won't be as worried

I've never quite understood those collectors who publicly demand absolute integrity from dealers but privately beg them to commit a crime when it's time to ship.

I concur. When I buy a coin it is because I want it and would like it to arrive in good order without trying to circumvent legal commitments. Just factor in the extras when deciding how much to pay.

You're given a moral compass for free at birth. Why then expend so much energy throwing it away?

DHL replied to my question of who collected fees today. I think this is the first time I have paid US Custom fees.
US Customs gets the customs duties. The shipper pays all of the handling fees.
It is interesting that this note came the same day I received a note from the Ancient Coin Collectors Guild. I can remember when the worst money laundering we talked about here was fools who over-cleaned bronze coins.
Congress has provided FINCEN, a U.S. Treasury Department entity, the ability to require persons engaged in the sale of antiquities to prepare and maintain anti-money laundering programs. It is possible or maybe even likely that the Treasury Department will use this authority to treat the ancient coin trade as regulated entities. Find out more about what this means, how this happened, and what you can do to help at the appropriate time here:
