I absolutely love the look of pure yellow Orichalcum. For whatever reason, I have not seen any really brassy looking coins cast struck before the time of Caligula yet. So I bought this Restitution Dupondius (struck by Nerva) solely for the reason that it is the yellowest portrait coin of Augustus I have ever seen Please post any yellow roman coins you have (or restitution issues, or what ever comes to your mind) DIVVS AVGVSTVS / IMP NERVA CAES AVG REST Radiate head of Divus Augustus right / Globe with rudder in front Brass Dupondius, Rome 98 RIC 131 (II, under Nerva), BMCRE 154, C 568
Love that Nerva-ish portrait of Augustus ! My only yellow coin is a worn down Hadrian sestertius from the travel series Hadrian, Sestertius HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P , laureate and draped bust right RESTITVTORI HISPANIAE, Hadrian raising kneeling figure of Hispania 24.3 gr Ref : RCV # 3633, scarce Q
Julius-G => congrats on adding that sweet OP-Yellow (a beauty) => here are a few of my comfy yellow coins ... a couple of A-Pius and a Sep Sev Oh, and I may as well toss-in my Augustus as well, eh?
My yellowest sestertius (I don't have many sestertii): Marcus Aurelius posthumous issue struck under Commodus in CE 180 sestertius; 27 mm, 22.8 gm. Rome Obv: DIVVS M ANTONINVS PIVS, bare head right Rev: CONSECRATIO / S-C, eagle with spread wings on globe, facing, head left Ref: RIC 656 (Commodus) It was purchased it relatively early in my ancient collecting. No one else bid (should have been a clue ). The funky chicken eagle was amusing. Where are the rest of the reverse legend letters? Smoothed into oblivion??
Cool posts everyone!! Since I usually collect the 'big boys' with patina, I have few that show any yellow...but this sestertius of Caligula comes pretty close.... Sestertius 37/38, Rome. C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS P M TR POT / PIETAS. Veiled Pietas seated to l., holding patera in r. hand; l. arm on statue. Rev. DIVO - AVG / S - C. Veiled Caligula in toga standing to l., sacrificing over altar, behind him sacrificial steer and two servants. In the background the Temple of Divus Augustus with six columns, decorated with garland. 28.96 g. RIC 36. C. 9. BMC 41. CBN 51. Bauten Roms 33.

Here’s an LRBC-- Late Roman Brass Coin Commemorative A.D. 348 16mm 1.4gm OBV: ROMA, draped bust of Roma right, wearing visored and crested helmet. REV: Anepigraphic- Emperor, helmeted and in military dress, standing facing, head left, holding spear in right hand and resting left hand on shield. P-R across fields. RIC VIII Rome 104 “The description above is from RIC VIII, which is outdated. The figure on the reverse is female (which can be seen clearly on some examples)- so either the goddess ROMA (which seems unlikely as ROMA is already on the obverse) or maybe the personification of CONSTANTINOPOLIS or possibly VIRTVS. It also seems most likely that these coins were struck in Constantinopolis in A.D. 330 for the dedication of the city. These coins were assigned to the Rome mint mainly because of the ROMA obverse and the P R on the reverse, which stands for POPVLI ROMANI (Roman People), but a sister issue of this type has Constantinopolis on the obverse and PAX reverse with P-R across the fields. VOT P R appears on other issues, like the shields of VLPP’s from a variety of mints, so there is no reason to believe that P R must be indicative of a Rome product.”
All of these have been toning since cleanings long ago. The Titus is a sestertius and was ex-bronze disease when I got it in 1988 from a dealer still in business who does not sell coins like this anymore. The others are dupondii.
very nice! i posted this in another thread recently, but it is pretty "brassy". Tetrarchy of Chalkis, Coele Syria, Lysanias, 40 - 36 B.C. O; female bust, R: double cornucopia, flanked by ligatures, 22 x 24 mm, 5.4 g
Being essentially a 'green or dark brown patina' guy, I don't have any blatantly yellow coins - the best I can offer are dark-yellow-and-tan. These are some of them:
My only brassy Roman: Since joining this forum and seeing your nice examples, JG, I am coming to appreciate lightly toned bronze a lot more.
