Sounds like a valuable collection. Maybe VERY valuable. In the Redbook you'll notice that a coin's value can vary dramatically depending on its condition. For a brief introduction, read the few pages titled "Conditions of Coins" (near the front of the Redbook). Here's another Coin Grading Tutorial. Can you grade your own coins? Sure. Just compare 'em with photos of professionally graded coins at PCGS Photograde Online. Or for a fee, a third-party grading company (e.g., PCGS, NGC, ANACS) can fully evaluate the condition of your coins. Tip: Do NOT try to clean your coins! You can easily do more harm than good. Lots more info is available online. But sometimes it's better to ask here on the Forum; there are lots of knowledgeable folks here willing to help.
Hello Durante, You have received much good advice especially on the subjects of NOT CLEANING THE COINS and KEEPING THE COLLECTION CONFIDENTIAL. It would be nice to view some photos of the collection here at CoinTalk. Perhaps you could post a wide angle shot of the whole thing and a couple close-up photos of the nicer material like the silver US coins from the 1700s. Edit to add: My friend Roger owns Jimmy Durante's bullet proof car from when he entertained in Las Vegas.
