Acetone seems to evaporate very quickly. If I use it, I put it in an old glass jam jar. It is like an old canning jar. You should be able to go out and buy a small Mason or Ball canning jar that would do the trick.
As to the evaporation rate of Acetone. It is like any liquid in that there are variants that may tend to differenciate the rapidity of evaporation. In other words the higher the temperature, the faster the evaporation rate. The larger the surface exposed to air, the faster the evaporation rate. The percent of humidity in the air also effects the evaporation rate. Rapidity of air movement also changes this rate. So if you use a large mouthed glass jar, outdoors in say 90 degree weather, 20 percent humidity and a very stiff wind, the Acetone will evaporate rapidly. If you do remember to keep away from anyone using a bar-b-que grill.
Acetone way back when I was a Corpsman we use it all the time to clean the skin of patients in medical. To get old tape off the skin. sometimes if we were in a hurry no gloves worn. Now I know whats wrong with me
lol guys, it's acetone, not plutonium... and it's not that bad. http://www.ccohs.ca/oshanswers/chemicals/chem_profiles/acetone/health_ace.html It's the primary ingredient in most nail polish remover for pete's sake!
Despite the dangers, though, sometimes it's the only way to get rid of that green slime or brown mold. (having DMed a game last Friday night, I had to comment)
This works great too for the green stuff and the hazy look. Ammonia dip and vinegar dip afterwards. See this article: http://www.pcgs.com/articles/article616.chtml I have taken some ho hum Mercury Dimes and after they came out of the ammonia they looked awesome! Here are some SLQ's that came out pretty nice.
Those are so bright, they burned my retinas. But seriously... They look good but I think they are now considered cleaned an are worth significantly less as a collectible.
Your tellin' me that those green, hideous coins would be worth more than the end product????? If nothing else they have been preserved. Sorry, but I don't agree with you. I don't plan on selling them and I am VERY happy with them now.
Even though I didn't like your response, I will abide by the majority on CT. If everyone agrees with you, I will no longer use the ammoia. But if improving them is wrong, then all the coins that have come up from the ocean floor should have been left as is too...crud and all. These coins were buried for 30 years and just needed a bit of refreshing and restoration. I believe they are improved vastly! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Thanks! I do this "improvement" with fear and trembling. I love coins and would NEVER intentionally do damage to them. I hate to admit it, but these coins were previously in a bag labeled "junk". The time spent in the ammonia took them from melt to keep forever!!!
I'm with you actually! I love a nice shiny coin too! But if I've learned one thing after only being here for 3 or 4 months, it's that cleaning is BAD. Don't hate the player... hate the game! lol
I have a bunch of coins here with PVC damage that HAVE to take an acetone bath soon... now I'm fighting the urge to toss in a whole bunch more AND give them an amonia bath to boot! Stop it! You're pulling me back to the Darkside!!! lol
