Hello, Sorry busy with X-Mis dinner... Calbrey, yours looks like one from Cyprus. ( wheat grain) Mr. Dougsmit, your is indeed minted in Roma, for local use in Levant area, I think sim. to mine on the right. Greetings..
I see the portrait style of the MONVRB coins screaming Rome while the others are Eastern. When I last heard there were some suggesting that the dies could have been made in Rome and shipped to Antioch for use but the use of officinae letters suggests it was the coins that were transported. We need an assay report of trace elements to see which silver sources match.
I think the MONVRB are created in Rome and exported. The have indeed a different style there there Eastern counterparts.
Regarding the date. There is a possibility that word of Philip's death had not reached the East when the dies for the new year were cut. It is also possible that the traditional dates for the deaths of both father and son are off. I wonder from the number of late Eastern Philip I coins if he might not have survived and been supported longer than we had thought but this was a study in progress last I heard and not something I have kept up on.
Hummm quite interesting approach to the subject matter Mr. Doughsmit. I also bought this one recent...strange reverse..I have to take a look in Prieur...
@ Cyrrhus You're right. My coin was struck in Cyprus - Prieur 1578. BTW.. while looking for Cyprus, I discovered the city name of Cyrrhus since it begins with the letter C as well. Cyrrhus is also your user name . Is it by coincidence that you chose the name of this ancient city of Syria ? You may not answer this question.. It's out of curiosity. Thanks anyway for the info.
Here's a billon Tet from Antioch. It also has SC in exergue as well as letter B between the legs of the eagle. The coin belongs to Emperor Trebonianus Gallus. Prieur 659.
Hi. I just reviewed them again. Really superb condition and variety of control or mint marks. The items of Philip are also impressive. Keep up the hunt. Personally I feel like posting more Tets on this interesting thread.
