The uncle's folders were stored in a steel safe. Coins stored in plastic (not PVC) and paper-wrapped rolls in the safe were fine. My coins were stored indoors in a lawyer's bookcase along with some relatively rare books on ancient coins. Books were fine. We live in a fairly warm, dry climate too.

There is no doubt that the folders promoted degradation of the coins. This is particularly true given that the areas of corrosion were the edges and backs. Could be that different batches of folders have had varying amounts of metal-reactive chemicals. Main problem is with copper, copper-plated zinc, and steel coins. Nickel and silver don't seem to be affected much, not surprisingly.
