Can anyone tell me what causes the black spots on Liberty nickels? I've seen black spots on many otherwise nice examples online. What causes them and do they get worse with time? I don't see problems with black spots on any other nickel types. The composition has always remained the same for nickels.
Carbon spots and yes they can get worse over time. If I think of it tomorrow I'll post a proof Jefferson with some of the craziest carbon spots I've ever seen. I call it the leach nickel...looks like they were bleeding out old Tommy
Thanks! Heres an example that's just a shame. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1912-5c-PCGS-MS64-OGH-Old-Green-Label-Holder-Liberty-V-Nickel/352494168767 I guess NCS can remove them. If toning is present they remove the toning too and can't see the ghosting from the spots.
