I don’t normally depart from my one-per-Roman-ruler collection, but I was so impressed by this Ptolemy IV AE47, that I had to acquire it! I think the details on both sides are lovely. What’s your largest ancient coin? Can anyone see my 47 and raise me a 48?
I see your 47 and raise you a 48. Others here can beat us both. 48 mm (91.8 gm) with my smallest Ptolemy bronze atop, 14 mm (1.7 gm). It has a nice pedigree too-- from a collection formed in the 1800s by Professor James Eaton. For greater drama-- with my smallest coin atop (5 mm, 0.26 gm Macedonian monkey): My heaviest struck coin is this super cool Carthage 15 shekel: ZEUGITANA, Carthage early 2nd century BCE AE 15-shekel, 45 mm, 95 gm Obv: wreathed head of Tanit left Rev: horse standing right, left foreleg up; Flying Spaghetti Monster solar disk with uraei above Ref: Alexandropoulos J (2000) Les monnaies de l'Afrique Antique, 103; Müller L (1861) Numismatique de L'Ancienne Afrique, 131; Luynes 3782; Jenkins GK and Lewis RB (1963) Carthaginian Gold and Electrum Coins, Royal Numismatic Society, London, pl. 28 12 It's as thick as a Reese's PBC and almost the same diameter It's as big as an island
Well, you got me. I do have a "modern" coin that weighs more. AV 1000 Schilling 1969 Uganda 140g. 58mm.
My largest ancient isn't exactly in the same league as the one's already posted, especially the peanut butter cup sized shekel.... Its a follis of Galerius, London Mint. 28mm & 10.49g.
My heaviest STRUCK Ancient coin: Ain't just the diameter, Baby, its the MASS of the struck coin !!! Carthage AE 15-Shekel 102.6g on Scale Carthage 15 shekel 102.6g 7.5mm thick in-hand 3 Carthage AE 15-Shekel 45mm dia 7.5mm thick 102.6g 201-175 BCE Hannibal Tanit 4hoove down Horse SNG Cop 400 RARE O3
And what do you think of this one ? A massive one tonne of 99.99% pure gold, nearly 80 cms wide and more than 12 cms deep !!!
Mine is tiny in comparison: PTOLEMY IV AE36 OBVERSE: Diademed head of Zeus Ammon right REVERSE: PTOLEMIAOU BASILEWS, eagle standing left on thunderbolt, looking back at cornucopiae under right wing Struck at Egypt 221-205 BC 46.4g, 36mm SNG Cop 221
Surely you realize that being overweight and golden is dangerous. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...nt-gold-coin-from-berlin-museum-idUSKCN1P41KM I am safe.....I'm not golden. The idea of making a set of dies to strike only 7 examples is hard to understand. How many did they make of the Australian big gold? How many are in a roll?
Yes.. Canada is MUCH bigger than Texas... The Spirit of Haida Gwaii pure gold coin is the world's first 10-kg gold coin of 99.999% purity. Its $100,000 face value makes it the world's highest denomination 10-kg gold coin and highest denomination non-circulation coin. It is the second-highest denomination coin ever produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which produced a 100-kg gold bullion coin of 99.999% purity with a $1,000,000 face value in 2007. Composition: 99.999% gold Weight: 10,000 g Diameter: 180 mm Edge: Serrated Finish: Proof Face Value: 100,000 dollars Artists: Bill Reid (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse)
I query whether or not such a huge item, never intended for circulation (although technically legal tender) is, in fact, a "coin".
I do not think of it as a coin at all (as we view them).. perhaps a piece of art and maybe a technical achievement.. but mostly an infomercial.
It's an aes formatum. Precursor to Roman aes coinage but not as old as aes rude. Basically currency before Roman coins were in use. Here's one link
