B6948EF9-B0BA-4AF3-9968-A570377DD387.jpeg I don’t normally depart from my one-per-Roman-ruler collection, but I was so impressed by this Ptolemy IV AE47, that I had to acquire it! I think the details on both sides are lovely.
What’s your largest ancient coin? Can anyone see my 47 and raise me a 48?

I see your 47 and raise you a 48. Others here can beat us both.

48 mm (91.8 gm) with my smallest Ptolemy bronze atop, 14 mm (1.7 gm).

It has a nice pedigree too-- from a collection formed in the 1800s by Professor James Eaton.

For greater drama-- with my smallest coin atop (5 mm, 0.26 gm Macedonian monkey):

My heaviest struck coin is this super cool Carthage 15 shekel:

    ZEUGITANA, Carthage

    AE 15-shekel, 45 mm, 95 gm
Obv: wreathed head of Tanit left

It's as thick as a Reese's PBC and almost the same diameter :D

It's as big as an island :D

Yes.. Canada is MUCH bigger than Texas...

The Spirit of Haida Gwaii pure gold coin is the world's first 10-kg gold coin of 99.999% purity. Its $100,000 face value makes it the world's highest denomination 10-kg gold coin and highest denomination non-circulation coin. It is the second-highest denomination coin ever produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, which produced a 100-kg gold bullion coin of 99.999% purity with a $1,000,000 face value in 2007.

    Composition: 99.999% gold
    Weight: 10,000 g
    Diameter: 180 mm
    Edge: Serrated
    Finish: Proof
    Face Value: 100,000 dollars
Artists: Bill Reid (reverse), Susanna Blunt (obverse)

I query whether or not such a huge item, never intended for circulation (although technically legal tender) is, in fact, a "coin".

I do not think of it as a coin at all (as we view them).. perhaps a piece of art and maybe a technical achievement.. but mostly an infomercial.

Is that a chunk of Aes Rude?

  19. David@PCC

    David@PCC allcoinage.com

It's an aes formatum. Precursor to Roman aes coinage but not as old as aes rude. Basically currency before Roman coins were in use. Here's one link

I’m gonna nominate this as the winner!
Unfortunately Aes Formatum isn’t a coin, is it?
