Ellsworth lead a group of soldiers over to take down. He ran up the stairs, ripped it down from the flag poll on the roof and was headed down the stairs with it. Southern supporter, James Jackson, met him on the stairs with a double barrelled shotgun, and killed Ellsworth using both barrels.
