<p>[QUOTE="coop, post: 983922, member: 17656"]I feel they are caused by a die clash chiping away part of the die and it continues to chip away after continued use. These chips usually stop when they area the outside if a device. But looking at an overlay of a wheat cent you can see where the wheat lines pass over the area in question.</p><p><a href="http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/Wheat_Overlay_obverse_1911.jpg" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/Wheat_Overlay_obverse_1911.jpg" rel="nofollow">http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/Wheat_Overlay_obverse_1911.jpg</a></p><p><a href="http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/Wheat_Overlay_reverse_1911.jpg" target="_blank" class="externalLink ProxyLink" data-proxy-href="http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/Wheat_Overlay_reverse_1911.jpg" rel="nofollow">http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/Wheat_Overlay_reverse_1911.jpg</a></p><p>The dies go through clashes many times.
