I live 150 yards from the Yuba River levee in Northern California. I was visiting my brother, who lives about 100 miles from me, when on February 12 nearly 200,000 people were ordered to evacuate the area threatened by the Oroville Dam, which included me. So I bid in Goldberg Auction 96 in absentia, before returning home on February 15. My first winning bid was on lot 1535. These types used to be listed together under "Siculo-Punic" before scholars began designating them as being from specific mints, e.g. Entella, Lilybaion, and Panormos. An early issue with attractive old cabinet toning and a pedigree to 1894 made this a good choice to add to my Magna Graecia collection. Entella, Sicily, Siculo-Punic issue, AR Tetradrachm, c 407-398 BC, 17.59. OBV: 'QRTHDST' (“Carthage” in Neo-Punic) across lower field; forepart of horse right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horse with wreath and holding caduceus; before, barleycorn. REV: 'MHNT' (“In the Camp” in Neo-Punic) across lower field; palm tree with two bunches of dates. Jenkins, Punic 14 (O3'/R14; this coin cited); HGC 2 258 (R1). Purchased in Ira and Larry Goldberg Auction 96, 14 February 2017, lot 1535. From the Hanbery Collection. Purchased privately from Classical Numismatic Group, Inc. in 1991. Ex Munzen & Medaillen AG 43, 12 November 1970, lot 12. Ex Robert Carfrae (died 1900) Collection, Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, 23 May 1894, lot 7. I will post the other two wins later. POST YOUR SICULO-PUNIC SILVER!
