There was a lot of action on the bid board the other night and because of that I got some great deals!!

On the bid board there were maybe 12-15 certified Kennedy Half Dollars, mostly modern proofs graded NGC PF70UCAM. There were also several certified presidential dollars, including a Washington Missing Edge Lettering coin in NGC MS65. All of these certified coins were grouped together towards the middle of the bid board.

I really wasn't interested in those certified coins as I'm not really into moderns and definitely not into MS70 or PF70 coins. I just think the premiums are way too high for coins that are relatively common. Sure, some coins graded 70 are expensive and don't have a high certified population, but there are also hundreds of thousands, or even millions of sets still out there with uncertified coins in them and surely there are more 70s of just about every date still out there. Additionally, there are many MS70/PF70 coins I've seen that aren't perfect!! Mostly, I'd rather buy a nice looking complete proof set in the government packaging and have lots of money left over to buy classic coins or bullion.

In any event, the only one of the certified coins I put a bid in on was the Washington Missing Edge Lettering coin which I figured was worth around $30 (they have come down a ton in value recently). I was quickly outbid on that one however. There was a lot of interest on the certified coins from some of the dealers who attend the bid board. Since each coin goes to the last marked bid on the bid card when the time expires, you can imagine that the final few minutes of bidding on these coins was pretty active amongst these dealers outbidding each other trying to be the last bid before time is called. This created quite a crowd towards the center of the bid board at the end and pretty much blocked other bidders from bidding on (or even seeing) the other coins in the area. Usually, there are bidders competiting in the last couple of minutes, but they are usually much more spread out.

That worked out great for me. Earlier, I had put in some lowball bids on a few coins that I never expected to win. I figured I'd put in a low bid, then check back in the last couple of minutes to see if I needed to bid any higher. As I mentioned, I couldn't get to the coins anyways in the last few minutes, but neither could anyone else!! Accordingly, I was able to win the following coins:

1920 Standing Liberty Quarter in Fine for only $4.25!

1935 Mercury Dime cleaned w/ VF details for $2

1944 Mercury Dime in VF for $2

1957-D Roosevelt Dime in XF for only $1!!!!

1897 Barber Quarter cleaned w/ G details for only $2.25!!!!

and an 1857 Seated Liberty Dime "love token" w/ "Tom" engraved on the reverse for only $1!!!!!

Typically on the bid boards I'm able to score a coin or two at a low price either because no one else notices it amongst the 400-500 other coins or because they just don't realize what the value of the coin really is. But, I can't remember getting so many coins for so far under their real value at once. Thanks to the blockers who were bidding on those certified moderns!!!!

:thumb:
