I don't think filing a local police report will do much. Also, I found out from personal experience that the Secret Service no longer investigates counterfeit coins after speaking to their field office. Your best case is hope you get your money refunded, one way or another. May the force be with you.

I'll say it again: if you haven't already, check it with a magnet. In my experience, it seemed like showing a coin stuck to a magnet tended to grease the wheels a bit. (The last couple of fakes I got weren't magnetic, though; I think they were silver-plated copper, with an extra ~10% of thickness to get the correct weight.)

 

the O.P mentioned that money was a non-issue, do you think ebay is going to listen with out some hard evidence that its fake ? Very doubtful an experts opinion such as a PCGS, Refusing to grade because it,s fake would carry much more weight.

 

I understand your point, but if i take the time to send it anywhere for grading i completely lose any help I could get from eBay and the seller gets no sanction at all from them. I believe the photos i took should be enough to show that, 1. It's not genuine, and 2. It's the same object as in the listing.

 

I got it back out (i had it repackaged to send back), it doesn't stick to a magnet. I took some more pictures, these show the surface texture a little better

 

Thanks for checking! And no point in checking its thickness, as they didn't even try to make it match the proper weight. Good luck with the return/refund - although I wish eBay would let you keep the fake, as they used to, instead of sending it back to the seller so he can try again.

 

I contacted my local police department anyway, for documentation if nothing else. I know they're not going to investigate but it adds to the paper trail and footprint of the case. I also sent an email detailing my complaint, with photos for evidence, to the county sheriff in Tennessee where the seller resides, according to the return address on the envelope they shipped it in. Their local sheriff probably won't do anything but it's now very well documented across multiple law enforcement agencies.

 

The last time I got ripped off for a big purchase on eBay, they required me to get a local police report. The local police were nonplussed - they apparently don't get a lot of "I've been attacked by an empty envelope" calls.

 

Shipping theft is real and a big deal. Jeff, did you see the thread about the couple of crackheads who stole from a shipping contractor? It happened in my city. I've had packages from eBay just evaporate up in smoke before they were delivered.

Sure - but this one wasn't stolen, or even slit open. Dude was flat-out scamming multiple buyers, sending out envelopes containing only newspaper. Ghosted me as soon as I contacted him about the empty envelope, and apparently ghosted eBay as well. No idea whether the company was able to recover their money from him, but they made me whole.
