i got a slabbed coin today with that pesky old collector/dealer label gunk on it.

I mean this stuff seems semi-fossilized. What’s the best way to attempt to remove it? Or let it go?

    Thanks, gang.

This stuff took old label gunk off my slabs like they were never there. Be careful around the TPG hologram. It takes that off too.

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

After removing all of the paper with my finger nail, I use rubbing alcohol with a cotton ball to go after the glue.

I've found that a pair of vice grips does the job regardless of how caked on the residue is.

I usually use the little gauze pads designed to remove adhesive tape and its stick'em from skin. You can buy them in little sealed packets at the drug store or order online. Obviously safe for skin. Only warning it that it might take off a hologram if there is one on the slab.

Lighter Fluid on a Q-tip works well to remove gummy on plastics.

Most slabs are not waterproof. Definitely don't water on the inside.

OP- is that turtle wax the stuff you use for slab scratches?? Ive been meaning to pick some up because just about all my slabs are scratched. Some have very deep distracting scratches that distort the view of the coin:banghead:

I am addicted to the stuff.... Well, my slabs are anyways. The slab in the photo was so horribly gouged that the fellow I purchased that coin from insisted on having it re-holstered for me. Fifteen minutes with than lens polish and some elbow grease and that slab was like a brand new windowpane. It’s cheap and available at any parts store. Comes in a kit and one bottle lasts forever. Don’t let the stuff get on a TPG hologram.

Oops i just realized you werent the OP with that photo. Thanks for realizing my mistake and responding. Yea thats exactly what i need then. Someone has told me the name of it before but i always forget. There are a number of hillbilly tricks for headlight restoration. Toothbrush & toothpaste, or fine grit sandpaper , then finer grit, then rubbing compound and a buffing wheel etc. None of which would i ever try on a slab:bucktooth:

Only reason I tried it was that slab was soooo far gone. I wanted to try before I sent it in for a new holder. To say I was pleased with the results is an understatement. I am a perfectionist and the results were absolutely perfect.

    Hey 1 more thing-
Is that a cut up Tshirt you are using for buffing that stuff. In other words, have you found a preferred type of cloth to use. During trial and error ???

I use SLAB-RENEW. It gets scratches out too. It works better on PCGS slabs. NGC slabs- not so much. You have to be careful around the TPG hologram with this too. It will come off if you’re too aggressive.
