I completely refuse to give up my collection for any reason. I will go as far as having my wife sign an agreement before marriage that she can't touch the coins. What she does with them after I'm dead is none of my concern.
You should go all Egyptian like and take your coins with you to your grave. In a lilttle pyramid, all wrapped up in gauze.
http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/787653/Really-Useful-Boxes-Plastic-Storage-Box/ I switched out of a couple of foot lockers to these. When I looked the manufacturer up the boxes were made out of non PVC materials. I put several small rechargeable desiccants in each one and have a large desiccant box for the overall area.
I don't understand your question, what exactly is a "bank box in security" ? And if the safety deposit box vault is humidfied, how can it be dehumified at the same time ? My comment was rather straightforward, I thought. I built several banks over the course of my career and they always had it right in the specs that the SDB vault be humidified. And all SDBs were always in the same vault. And the reason for the humidifiers is to promote the safe storage of paper and documents. Given that, since humidity is bad for coins (but good for paper), safety deposit boxes can be bad for coins in that regard. They are great for security reasons, but bad for storage reasons. So if you use an SDB for coins, you need to take extra precautions in the form of extra silica gel packs to counteract the higher humidity found in the vaults. And check them more often so you can replace as necessary.
Can you guys recommend where I can get a good (aka cheap) silica gel packs (or any other type of dehumidifiers). Also, what's better/cost effective, rechargeable or just the disposable packs. Finally, if I go with silica, is it necessary to go with the color changing ones (how easy it is to tell your silica balls, or packs are saturated)?
Let me clarify. I was wondering if there was a place that has some or most of the security properties of a bank box, but was either not humidified or was even dehumidified so it would be safer and easier to store coins there. Such a place could, but need not actually be, a bank vault without a humidifier.
Yeah - http://www.jpscorner.com/silica-gel-humidity-control.html I always used the 40 gram packs - never had one wear out - and 1 40 gm is big enough for most safes. And yeah, the color changing ones are the easiest to take care of as well as the easiest to see when they need changing. Color change is blue - pink.
