I've been collecting foreign notes for years now but most of them are pretty meh when it comes to looks.

I'm looking to start focusing on real pretty ones. I like ones that were from the American Bank Note and Thomas De La Rue companies with those nice engravings, as well as anything with a neoclassical sort of vibe to it.

Do you have any suggestions for CHEAPO notes that I could start going for?

    thanks :D

    V. Kurt Bellman Yes, I'm blunt! Get over your "feeeeelings".

    Modern? Obsolete? Either?

In obsoletes I like German Empire notes, near to, but not fully in, the hyperinflation era. Any Swiss. The Russian notes between the czars and the Soviet era are neat.

not too particular, but I've found that obsolete are usually nicer looking.

Examples of ones that I'm partial to would be
    1913 Chihuahua
    Imperial Russia
    1940s Greece
    1930s Hungary

Suriname had some very colourful bird and floral designs on their notes in the 1990s. They are all easily affordable.

Depends on what you mean by affordable, and what grade you would like them in. I personally like the obsolete notes from Mexico, many are printed by the ABN. There are some notes from Costa Rica too, lots of remainders from 1891 can be had relatively cheap. And of course don't forget the old USA Silver Educational series though that may be a bit pricier.

Thanks! Affordable for me is $20-$40 or so (I'm a poor college student).

I really love the education series, but they're way to expensive! I have a single $1 that I inherited from Gramps, but that's it. That is exactly the style I like though.

Check out the Costa Rica set then. It's 1899 not 1891, my mistake. They go for about 20 dollars each, you may like them.

Old German notes are pretty neat looking, and not too pricey. Here's a couple to check out. 5markgermannoteobv.jpg 5markgermannoterev.jpg 1908german100 note rev.jpg 1908german100 note obv.jpg

A country in the news with the death of their King Bhumidol lately is Thailand. They have lovely notes and a lot of commemoratives for the royal family including some in interesting denominations like 70, 80, 90 etc Baht.

I agree with the German ones. Some of those are so amazing. Earlier french notes are pretty as well. As well as older Canadian ones. Honestly there are a ton of nice notes. I would just go on ebay and see what you could find for a couple of bucks.

Man this thread is really making me want to buy too many notes haha. Here's one I picked up due to the excessive amount of dragons on it.

Greek notes are usually affordable because inflation rendered them valueless quickly:

    Then there is Hungary:

And the common theme with all of these notes posted above is that they are all attractive notes, with women and all imminently affordable.

Some of my favourite notes come from Africa, especially Mali:

Though some of the earlier Malian designs can be very pricey. African notes are very colourful and affordable when new, when they get a few years old they get pricey.

Here is an affordable Madagascar note:

    And one from Ivory Coast:
