Examples of such euro errors do exist, but they are somewhat less common on the large denominations than on the small denominations. And when it comes to value or realized auction prices the results can vary widely. This happens for a couple of reasons.

Number one would be that the buyer simply wants this coin and is willing to pay whatever it takes to get it. Number two would be that the buyer has little or no idea of the true value of the coin and thus greatly overpays. In both cases the realized price is meaningless when it comes to determining the actual market value of the coin. All too often other collectors forget this and when they do, they become a victim of the second example.

Because of this, unless you really know what you are doing and are very familiar with the error coin market, you would be well served stay away from bidding on such coins. Unless you want to risk your hard earned money.

well, i guess there are people who know what they are doing, even on ebay. There is a 3rd bidder now, so how do you define 'market value'?

ok there might be some sentiment involved, and that is unavoidable, but still...

if 3 people are willing to pay 200 euro for that coin, how can the market value be 15-30 euro, as stated earlier in this thread?

ok, it is a risk when you buy things like that, but there will always be a market filled with nuts who will pay the same price over and over again (if not higher...)

    thanks for your reply

i guess i'll have to wait and see...

Yes, there are people on ebay who know what they are doing. But there are 10 times that many who do not. Think about it for a minute. How many people are there who have bought gold plated State Quarter sets for prices like $29.95 to $49.95 ? There might be 10 or 12 different bidders bidding on the same set at those prices. Do you think that means the set is really worth that much ?

And that's an example of what I mean by the difference between market value and realized auction prices. Just because someone was willing to pay a given price for an item doesn't mean it has a market value equal to that price. The market value of an item is determined by what people who are knowledgeable in the field are willing to pay for it - not by what someone who doesn't know any better is willing to pay for it.

As an example, take the gold plated SQ sets I mentioned. If you were to walk into a dealer's shop with those items, what do think the dealer would pay you for them ? I'll tell you what he'd pay - $1.25 - or face value, because that's all the set is really worth.

So with errors like this, there may be those willing to pay $200 or 200 euros, but until it is determined that you can sell the same item to one knowledgeable in the field of world errors for the same amount - it's not really worth that much.

    yeah, you are right.

but still, i like this coin very much. i found a website with euro-errorcoins, and none are more than 50% off center. even if it is an expensive coin, it will be a rare one. you can find them 10-15% off, and then they cost 15-30 EUR like stated earlier.

i still think this is a different case.

we'll see what the future brings, but i guess we won't see anything like that for quite some time...

That is a very nice error coin that is on Ebay.It is very odd to find the pre-2002 issues with errors in circulation.Occasionally,we get error coins in change, mainly pieces with clipped planchets though.

Thanks for your reply. That's exactly what i meant with everything above. The little clips and die breaks are easy to find, but this...

I think i won't see that again ever, like the description says.

Still a couple of days to go. Last time i checked, it passed 400 EUR, that's about $500...

That may or may not be good investment advice, but IMHO it is terrible collecting advice. jos_coins is looking at it as something he'd enjoy having in his collection, not something he'd buy with a profit motive. That's the right way to collect coins. :thumb:

Indeed! It would never leave my collection. I really think i would have a legendary coin, and that alone is worth that money :)

Then i can brag and make people drool, and isn't that THE reason we collect coins?
