It's about as close as you can get to Biblical Coins. I have a few of their bullion coins and they are nice.

I agree with Pishpash. I do not know why you are saying modern Israeli are "as close as you can get to Biblical coins", when you can get Biblical coins. I own all coins mentioned in the bible, and have quite an array of ancient Jewish and Roman provincial coins from Judea. All are available, especially widow's mites, (leptons), which are about as cheap as dirt.

My advice is to take your time. If you are determined to aim for a set, have a look around to find a coin (not to buy), but one that you really like. Have a look around to see what other coins, associated with this coin, that would go to make up your "set". Check for coins that are within your budget, not the high end coins that would make you sell your house.

Your first coin should be one that you are completely satisfied with. Good quality, well centred, not a coin that you buy with the intention of upgrading in the future.

I am one coin away from 12 Caesars, Otho eludes me, but my Nero is embarrassing.

I just buy stuff that I really like. I have bought (and still have) all sorts of rubbish in the past. Now, I am a little more discerning. I can't afford really high end coins, but I like most of the ones I have and I absolutely love a lot of them.

@Pishpash I saw an Otho this past weekend...little high priced and HIGHLY polished. Was tempted to negotiate, had it in hand, but holding off... I know the guy...

This thread and the 12 Caesar's thread have been brilliant. I'm only a year into the hobby and learned a ton reading the board today--probably second only to that time I read Doug's entire site (I read a lot of it, I mean).

A lot of solid advice and great ideas in this thread. I wish to echo Doug - collect what you like (coins that speak to you) and don't worry too much about "sets" or "themes" right now. You'll find your ancient coin home in due time. It almost seems sometimes that coins tend to find the right collectors.

In a rush and poor choice of words. I was referring to his statement about being a Deacon in his church. Just trying to give an alternative to ancients vs. new for Biblical coinage.
