Yet if a for sale link is posted to a thread you'll quickly remove it even though folks could simply choose to ignore it. Like the so eloquently explained above, no one is forced to click on it..... Seriously, are the Russians poisoning our water supply too? It's like existing in BizarreoLand.
So I guess we'll just have to post a warning to others when people post obvious click bait on multiple occasions. Since the OP appears to have no interest in discussing and learning about his coins after making numerous posts, I don't think we should reward him by adding views to his You Tube portfolio. Hopefully, by not adding views, we can slow down the amount of misinformation being fed to new collectors (Who am I kidding, we can't slow it down, but at least it feels good trying)
Read the part also: "If there is a point in the show where he asks for money for the coin, please send me the minute:seconds, and I will check it, BUT since anyone can ignore it why not do so?" If it was a sale link in content in a non B/S/T area, yes I would remove it by rule. I am still waiting for the min:sec in the video to act accordingly, but no one has sent it yet. Jim
Even though I have explained it I don't know how many times, in the forum rules the phrase self-promotion only deals with people trying to sell something. In other words, if you are NOT trying to sell something it is NOT self-promotion as far as the rules are concerned ! Create an informational website, post links to it here on the forum. By the way some choose to interpret the rules, that would be self-promotion and not allowed. Well guys I got news for ya, not only is it allowed, I strongly encourage members to do so ! What I'm trying to tell ya is that just because YOU call it self-promotion, that doesn't mean the CT staff does !
I've watched ONE of this posters videos before and swore to never watch another, but wanted to see what others were saying and they have just confirmed my belief that anything posted by this person is a waste of my time.
I agree and said something similar earlier in the thread. The rules are what they are, but this doesn't mean the membership should not police itself and as long as we're allowed to do so, so be it. Just because something may have been deemed acceptable this doesn't automatically make it innocuous and/or right. I also agree about not watching such videos, but from a personal standpoint I usually do watch them simply so that any comments made do not come from a position of ignorance or assumption. It's not that anyone listens or that it really matters, but in cases where the video contains misinformation, if (IF) it helps even one person avoid nonsense or BS, it's worth the effort.
I agree, There’s nothing wrong with providing factual information. The OP has only posted You tube videos. It’s been months since he responded to any comments. The claims he makes are totally incorrect (This could be expected from a new collector, but to do it again and again strongly suggests that he isn’t looking at the responses). And it’s been suggested (nicely) that they post still photos instead of videos so it’s easier for members to help them. I don’t see what’s wrong with pointing this out, just like when other members point out that a serial scammer, who has cheated a number of CT members continues to post (I could have easily fallen for that scam, but was fortunate that other's made me aware)
Have you WATCHED the offending videos, Doug? (@GDJMSP) Because if you do, or you have, you will KNOW that not just THIS one, but ALL of this poster's videos are scams, and not ANY kind of "information" other than mis- and dis-. My only question is, "Does that matter to site management?"
The monetization of such videos has been addressed by someone else, so there's no reason to repeat it and is why I removed that portion of your quoted post. That said, I've watched a few of your videos and enjoyed them even if not centered on a subject of great personal interest and simply because you were honest. You struck me as a guy simply sharing something he enjoys and not trying to turn it into fantasyland. In one that comes to mind I don't believe you discovered anything noteworthy and was still a good example of how things work in real life. This, in my most humble and respectful opinion, is night and day from some clown salting his own rolls and/or claiming to constantly find silver or walk out of a bank with a solid roll of IHCs. I also didn't see a single example of you begging for likes or subscribers and/or making all sorts of grand nonsense claims designed to hopefully result in them. The difference is intent, and the unfortunate fact is that it's usually rather clear in a majority of the videos we see posted here. Still, and on solely a personal level, I really couldn't care less if you or anyone else had begged for such things. What gets me is how many times we've seen this type of video containing downright poor to pitifully misleading information, and I think we both understand how dangerous this can be, especially to those just entering into the hobby. If Doug and Peter find this type of advertising acceptable that's great and I certainly respect it, but the membership shouldn't have to zip it or be unable to warn others about what such videos really are. This is a good example of why...
I think that this pretty much sums it up. I think that all of the mods have their hands full as it is just trying to keep up with regular posts, let alone having to watch entire videos each time they come up.
This is true, but their "need" to be so "hands full" of this other stuff is STRICTLY self-imposed, not to mention bizarre.
After Silver Searcher I just stopped completely watching any coin related videos. Time better spent in my gardens and metal detecting/bottle digging. I know you do not like the You Tube platform but it has saved me a lot of money in the past couple years. I learned how to change a ball joint and heater switch in my truck. My son has learned a new trade in pimping CB's, SSB and ham radios. He is making money and I have saved several hundreds dollars this past year. There is "some" good there plus my craving for watching old footage of my favorite bands. Now I need to find a video to help me re-string a few old tube radio tuner/volume dials.
Of course there's good stuff on YouTube and I don't think anyone, including Mr. Bellman, intended to suggest otherwise. Although I can only speak certainly for myself, I assumed it was understood that YouTube related criticisms were not directed at the host but the individuals making use of it.
It's pretty universally bad for coin videos. I did change my own fuel pump in my old Subaru working with a YouTube, but I had to wade through so many useless ones first, before finding a useful one. I have a very LOW tolerance for Internet things with a low signal to noise ratio. I like the "editor function" too much to be a true 'Net fan. This site's ratio is falling, by the way. I shouldn't be surprised, really. The initial reason I came here was to counter rampant disinformation here about the 2014 ANA show in Chicago. Maybe four years needs to be considered a good run.
Most of the Metal Detecting videos on YouTube are awesome!.. Some individuals like to plant things in the ground in a few videos to pretend that they found something.. Not awesome
Kirk, What in the Universe do you know about the tasks of a moderator?? You do realize this is volunteer labor and time Right ??? You know nothing about what has to be done behind the stage, you just think it all appears by Magic? Maybe in your mind. This is the 3rd time today I seem to recall that you hinted/ or said you were so dissatisfied with the service you were leaving. Did too few members jump in and beg you to stay?? Make up your mind and stay within the rules or not stay. I will not be happier nor sadder with either event. Have a nice day Pet your cats and talk to them. Jim
Most of the coins I have detected over the last 8 years had Environmental Damage issues. Freshly dropped coins are better. I just like the suspense of going to the park or beach not knowing what I will detect! It's soothing at times.
