A package sent by Ira & Goldberg Coins & Collectibles to a client was taken from a FedEx Truck in Portugal. 27 Greek and Roman coins from Goldberg’s Auction #104 were stolen.

Images of the coins and data are posted at Coins Weekly.

That's really unfortunate. I bid on a few of these coins and will definitely notice if they resurface. Hopefully the thieves will be caught swiftly!

Good on you for sharing this. I get the alerts from Numismatic Crime Information Center and recommend that all members sign up for these. The only thing worse than being robbed is buying a coin that turns out to be stolen and having it later seized by police as stolen goods or evidence.

These are not the kind of coins one unloads at the monthly coin club show. Wherever they show up they will attract attention, By the way, how does one rob from a delivery service truck?

o man.. sorry to hear that. but as stated, those aren't run of the mill ancients and will not be easy to sell on the open market, publicly anyway. i wish speedy recovery.

Most likely a crime of opportunity.

Where I live it's not uncommon for the delivery driver to hop out of the vehicle with a handful of packages and deliver multiple at once, leaving the vehicle alone on the side of the road for several minutes at a time. The door is usually left open and packages are in plain view. I'm honestly surprised it doesn't happen more often. When I delivered pizza in college I found I needed to lock my car even if I was walking from the road to the customer's front door because I had people open the door and try and grab my cash more than once and I never had more than about $50 cash in there. I doubt the thief even knew what he was stealing, he probably just saw a small easily concealable and movable package and an opportunity.

How terrible - 27 top-class Greek and Roman coins, a number golden, and someone just helped themselves from a FedEx truck in Portugal. How could it have been so easy ? Is Security not top priority, esp. for such precious items ? - We all, surely, need to be very aware of security issues for our valuable, and also not so valuable, coins ? This is something well worth discussing. Might it even be worth online, or offline, articles ?

What a sad and unfortunate theft. My fear is that the criminal will turn around and scrap the coins given how difficult it would be to sell them.

Yes, thanks for the notification & link.

Every time I am at a large coin show & the "last-call" announcement is made for the show's Fed Ex truck shipment, I wonder if the driver(s) are properly prepared & escorted to the Fed Ex sorting facility.

Curiously, all of the stolen coins in this shipment appear to be among the unsold lots in that auction? I wonder if that's meaningful?

Maybe they should consider breaking up into multiple shipments in the future. Although, presumably it was all insured.

I hope they are recovered and the criminals are prosecuted. Of course here in the States we have a catch and release policy.
