Use my criteria, for a minute. Like we did no the other thread. I think it may change your mind. It did for me.
It is all lighting and angles. Overall these are both nice coins and here are a few more angles little different light. Gonna reveal grades later this evening. I enjoy both of these coins.
Okay, this lighting changes it again. To me, they are both the same grade. They look much baggier with this lighting. I say they are both 63. Both nice coins, but the original photography was like a TrueView—it hid the imperfections. Both coins have much cleaner reverses than the obverse.
Coin #1 MS62/63PL Coin #2 solid MS64+/65, no PL CAC? I’d put a sticker on both of them, depending on how they were graded of course ...if I had to guess, coin #2 got the sticker
I basically always look at Morgan's that way. In this case...both are very nice looking coins. I think coin #1 has more small marks but coin #2 has more big marks. I also think the photo of coin #2 has too much light and is blowing out the PL look. Coin 1 might be DMPL. I personally would rather have coin #1 in my collection...but I think both might have the same grade. I think the big hit on the cheek of coin #2 is what limits the grade.
The big reveal, what are your opinions now seeing the grades? I really think the one could be PL and it is actually my favorite of the two. Both are nice coins to hold and I like each one.
Got the bottom one first and guessed the grade right for the first one second although it should've got PL.
The full slab photo makes the MS 66 again look like the first photo-where 66 seems fair. The MS 63 full slab photo look nicer than your second set but not as good as the original photo; 63/64 seems fair. The reflectivity is likely not enough for PL or there are breaks that inhibit the reflectivity (can't tell for certain with pictures).
Amazing how different shots can show both beauty and brutality in the same subject. Add in grading subjectivity and you get a very wide range of perception. A very good lesson learned is to view the coin in hand.
This is wildly inconsistent. The coins look different in every photo. How can we possibly have a meaningful GTG, with pictures where they look like different coins in each photo? The reveal photos look nothing like the other sets. Be consistent, or expect results all over the place. Since all we have to grade with are the photos, it becomes a “Guess which photos look like the coins” as opposed to Guess the Grade.
I get that but we can have an opinion on a coin based on one photo. To me that is not enough to assess a grade. Ideally coin in hand is best, but it is so easy to manipulate the image that you could never get the correct grade. It also shows inconsistencies with third party companies like PCGS and NGC. Sorry for the multiple photos. Here are the side by sides with the grades.
Well, most of the time, all one gets is one photo. You are new to this rodeo, obviously. If all one has to go on is one photo, then it had better be the most accurate photo. In this exercise, all it showed is inconsistency in photos, not TPG inconsistencies. I’ve been at this game for well over 50 years, and one can only grade from what they see. You presented wildly divergent photos. Most of the guessers changed their minds multiple times. If you buy coins sight unseen, you better learn to grade off of photography. This was not only confusing, but as I said, inconsistent.
I get it and maybe I was a tad excessive on all the different photos, but I also know if I o my post the trueview then people don’t get an accurate glimpse of the coin either. Was more or less just wanting to see what people’s grades were with the photos the dealers have and then with actual photos of the coin in a not prettied up light. I’ll learn though.
Ultimately I want to learn and grow in this hobby. I have only been at this for a fraction of the time you have Morgandude11 and I love the feedback I have been given.
