On a recent trip to Wales and England, I had a chance to check out the city of Bath and did a quick tour of the Roman Baths. An inviting soup of tepid green water... At the bottom of the Sacred Spring they found over 12,000 coins from the Roman period (http://journals.cambridge.org/actio...e=online&aid=9099112&fileId=S1047759400011302). Even back then people tossed coins in the well/fountain/bathtub?! Some coins predate the Roman's presence in Bath... A summary of coins found in the Sacred Spring... I found a clearer version on the web (thanks to those whose image I borrowed!)... Near the site of the Roman Baths, they discovered a huge hoard of roman coins dubbed the Beau Street Hoard (http://www.romanbaths.co.uk/beau-street-hoard)... Thought I'd share. Enjoy!
If you have some time, it is a short walk from the Roman Baths over to the local coin shop in Bath located on the Pulteney Bridge. Yes, there are shops on the actual bridge (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulteney_Bridge)... The coin shop has been in this location for the last 50 years (according to the shopkeeper I talked with - a very nice woman). The actual shops have been on the bridge since the bridge was built in 1774... Small store but packed full of goodies. Could have spent years in there.
Wonderful photos!! Obviously you had a great time. Sigh, another across the pond trip I ache to make!!! I hope @Pishpash catches this thread.
Last fall we were in Avebury visiting the stone circles and didn't allow enough time to get to Bath. It's definitely on our travel agenda for our next trip. Thanks for sharing your photos
