Basics of Double Dies

Technically a die physically carries none of the design. Just to complicate things a little more.

IMO, it is not complicated at all. However, I don't understand what you are trying to say.

Please define the words in red you used (your meaning) in the quote above like you did before with "hub" that can describe several different things. The way I see it, there would be no design on a coin if there was not one on the die.

 

The area that has been removed from the die is the actual design. In other words the design is nothing more than a void/hole in a die.

Wait, I get it! A doubled die coin is technically a piece metal with different parts in relief.

 

@Insider, you're both understanding it the same. What @justafarmer is saying is an impression of the design is left on the die. That impression being a "design," in itself, you're both right. But the "authorship" of the design was on the hub, not on the die, and I think that's what he's really trying to get across. Or maybe I'm a horse's tail. Or maybe I'm not, sometimes I'm not.

 

IMHO, saying that a die does not have a design on it (just a hole) does not add anything but confusion to anyone not as intelligent as Justafarmer. The coin's design elements can be into or on the die (Think about it. Why is that?) depending on what the coin is to look like.
