I have also hit the wall with Barber dime keys in F-AU. Thought I would be finished by now. I turned down every one I saw at the last Long Beach show, all were, IMHO, problem coins. There are several local dealers with my wish list in this area but no luck yet this year. All I can say is stand your ground and don't make a desperate move on an iffy or overpriced coin.
Yes. In good old New England the attics and barns swallow up a lot of good stuff hidden for decades. Heirs or new owners bring everything out on the front lawn and stick up a "Tag Sale" sign. Last month I bought a box of coins for $20. Right away there were 2 1964 half dollars, a 1965 half and 2 S.B. Anthony dollars and a Sac dollar. And mostly world coins mind you but also a 1890 V-nickle in XF/AU. I wrote a price of $90 on that nickle for someday when I rent a flea market table. But getting back to topic, I'm kind of thinking I may abort my Barber dime collecting before I get in too deep. I just won 3 five dollar gold coins on a dealer bid board, a 1878 cc dollar and a 1925 Stone Mountain. And I didn't think any of my bids were competitive! Needless to say that drained the bank...
If you all like Barber Dimes, then I thought you all might appreciate this 1898-P that I have! I picked it up about a year ago and meant to post pictures but neve got around to it. I am sorry that the pictures do not do it justice but it resides in two 2x2's for protection and I really didn't have time this evening to remove it, take pictures then put it in two new 2x2's. I believe that it will grade MS-65 and has a really strong Die Crack at about 6:00 o'clock on the Reverse which extends North through the Bow in the Wreath. I had to put the pictures in the Main Gallery section due to the sizes! http://www.cointalk.org/gallery/files/1/2/4/2/1898BarberDime1_632370.jpg http://www.cointalk.org/gallery/files/1/2/4/2/1898BarberDime2.jpg http://www.cointalk.org/gallery/files/1/2/4/2/1898BarberDime3.jpg Frank
Sorry for the delay in replying, I started to reply last night, but we were having power surges because of the rain and storm. Anyway: ANA link: http://www.money.org/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home show link: http://www.money.org/Content/NavigationMenu/NumismaticEvents/WorldsFairofMoney/default.htm hope to see you there.
Frank, I finally got around to removing my Barber Dime from the 2x2's and taking new pictures! They are still a little out of focus but what dio you think now? Go the links below! Frank
Frank: That is one really nice strike. Sure it is a Philly, and as such is normally a better strike even in those middle dates. However, very nice, and that is the start of a nice die break on the bottom reverse. :thumb:
acanthite Nice 1913 dime, however, the quarter is the hidden sleeper i the series. Most people concentrate on the obvious keys and semi-keys (Semi-keys include 1892 S, 1897 S, 1899 S) But, the 1913 Quarter is really tough. I do have a Fine, a VF and an AU -50, and each one is the only one of the grade that I have ever seen. I buy every piece, any grade (without problems) that I see. And since 1999 I have only gotten #20 pieces, total, including 12 in Good. In 1996 I got a VG for $10, today it trends for $27, I consider that still asleep.
I've tried to put together a few albums of those Barber Dimes for many, many years. I really hate the ones that are graded about G4 or less. At one flea market I go to there is a coin dealer that always has a box full of coins like Barger Dimes, Mercury Dimes, Standing Liberty Quarters, etc. All look as they should be in a junk box though. All dimes are $1, all Nickels are $0.75, all quarters are $2. This is regardless of condition but being poor quality to begin with, people banging them together every week, they get worse and worse all the time. At coin shows there are certain coins that are just not there in abundance or a decent grade and those are usually Barber Dimes and Liberty Head Nickels. For several years now I just kind of ignore those albums of mine for those coins since I know that unless I win the lottery here for millions, I'll never find certain coins in a decent grade.
A barber dime graded G4 doesn't seem like a bad deal for $1, but you have to want to collect in that grade.
Yes, I was just looking for an excuse to show it. I also picked up an 1897-O in VF, finally!. Another dealer I go to was accumulating barber dimes until one day a dealer from one of the regular advertisers in Coin World came and cleaned him out of every one above VG. If only they didn't look so flat and boring in G4, I would collect them in that grade.
1914 S Barber Quarter I just got this 1914 S Barber Quarter today for $36. And a 1913 for $4.30. Both in G4. I've also have been looking for higher quality semi key & key Barbers, Standing Liberty quarters and Walker halves. There aren't too many out there with a decent price.
mralexanderb Nice buys, you get a deal on the 1913 good price on the 14s also. However, old time G-4 is full rims. Now: Full obverse rim, some wear into a few letters on the reverse (ANACS Grading books).
Funny how that changes now isn't it? mralexanderb. YOU DID GOOD! A little weak but worth the money no doubt.
Your right. I just couldn't think of a grade less at the time. Then I noticed the AG-3 notation. The ones I was referring to were like that only maybe a little less. I'm not a good grader but if you need an electron microscope to read the date is AG-3, then that is what I was looking at.
