I recently picked these up and after receiving them, I discovered a small pinhole in each note. I really like these notes and would like to keep them, but how much does this effect the value? If I was to ask for a partial refund... what is a fair compinsation?

Without knowing what you paid and what context the sale was in, it's hard to say. Great looking notes though...

I recall hearing that small stacks of early banknotes were held together with pins since the paperclip had not been invented yet. That's why it isn't unusual to find pinholes on early notes. Maybe some experienced paper money collector can confirm if this is true or just a numismatic urban legend.

BTW: I have no idea if it has a significant effect on value
