Again, giving credit where credit is due, I did not cherry-pick this coin, although I was ready to buy it as an Augustus. Bill was the one who saw it for what it was. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: always take your CNG man to shows.
Wow Doug => that's a fantastic Nero (I also like both photos, but I think that the first less-glossy photo is my favourite) ... sorry if I picked the wrong one (again, they're both cool) JA => super new pickup as well ... I think it's awesome that you're now shooting "in-hand" photos (kinda like Batman has been doing for years!!) ... great scores, fellas (man, I'm jealous that everybody is showing-off their cool Baltimore stuff ... umm, that's Maryland, eh? ... it sounds like a pretty place ... I want to take a trip down from the Maritime provinces, through Maryland, Maine and Mass. => see a Bruins' game) Great stuff ... please keep it coming!! Cheers Hmmm ... apparently Maryland isn't as close to the Maritimes, Maine and Mass as I thought? (oh, well => maybe it'll be two trips?) => coin-show might be enough to sway the wife? (not fricken likely!!) =>
Well Steve, I prefer formal pics, so how about a compromise. I liked the casual in-hand images that I took better than the first ones, so I cropped out my hands and put in a black background. Also, this is a small coin, so I prefer a smaller image. I think this is better representation of the coin.
Not bad ... you take great photos Ummm although, it's probably no secret that I'm a total fan of "white-background" => either way, my friend => your coins rock and your photos are top-notch!!
I ordinarily like G-N but this is the sort of thing that makes you wonder about the service an auction house provides to their sellers in return for their fees. I am thrilled you got the coin. The fact that they had identified two others correctly pushes this to hilarious. Great coin!
Well, anyone can have a bad day I suppose, but the fact that the obverse legend says ΓAIOS KAISAP might have been a hint.
Well, it must have been Greek to them LOL.... And they only recognize Latin abbreviated inscriptions ??? Even I might have figured out the Greek stood for Gaius Caesar... I'm with Doug---it makes me wonder about Auction Houses and their services a bit. Bad day or not, you expect more from the 'professionals'.....But JA, you made out like a bandit!!!
JA, Here's an example that was won on bid at Heritage for over 3k....about my entire years coin budget LOL Of course, they are like comparing apples and oranges...but your cost still has to be a steal... Denarius of uncertain mint, RIC 540, EF
I'm not sure I made out like a bandit, Mikey. I don't concern myself about investment much, when it comes to coins. What thrills me is the fabulous portrait on a rare type - I wouldn't have gone looking for a coin of Gaius.
JA, Unfortunately, it wasn't won by me... if so I would be through for the entire remainder of the year LOL
Fair enough Doug....but how many, I wonder, actually are inscribed Gaius for Augustus by the time he instituted the principate?? My limited knowledge seems to only recollect Augustus Caesar...and numerous references of being the 'son' of Julius Caesar.. I'm not trying to split hairs, I'm genuinely curious---I recently failed to win, on bid, the well known Augustus denarius with the standing Lucius and Gaius reverse---my failed attempt to secure all three at once--my only Augustus a bronze provincial example of about VG/F grade...and zero examples of the 'princes'.
I know of no coin where anyone would dare to call Augustus Gaius. Before he was Augustus he was Caesar. There is a coin with C CAESAR but I certainly never saw one in person. It was not issued by Octavian but by Antony, I'd suspect. http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2176747
Blaze Star was a very good friend of mine. I knew her very well and in fact went to her house in Boston Whaler during hurricane Agnes to help her out. As a kid she always was in the lead Caddy in our Little League Parade. She was a good lady.
I lived very close to her home, in H.S. I worked on her car at a Shell gas station that was behind her home. She always came in for service. You know about her and governor Huge Long? I could tell you some stories about the 2 o'clock club. Just when you think you had Blaze she had you.... she was one heck of person. And good to the community and her girls too. She had 3 poodles 1 pink, blue and yellow....I tease her about the killer pastel dogs.
Yeah, I knew some of the rumors about her and Long, and only assumed them to be true. She was well know for taking care of her girls, but I did not know about the dogs.
