I will look forward to your pics of Marianne. I have an enormous collection of three medals, here they are. I have to watch my wallet, because this could become a very expensive collection I'm sure...
Very nice Mariannes. The middle one appears to have wings on the sides of her head not unlike a mercury dime. Sweet. I was also collecting French Sower coins but lost interest after starting to collect American Bank Note Co items
Kind of different, ey? For many years France has minted(?) medals, and historically they've been used for awards. You could buy a bunch, engrave the names of the "winners" on them (often for government-held positions, winners of events, etc), and give them out. They are found in bronze, silver and gold, and are not denominated with any value. They are not coins that one could spend. They still issue these medals, now mostly as collectibles. So the outer two in that picture are current, bought from http://www.monnaiedeparis.fr/. The center one is older, picked up of eBay. They are found in various shapes, since they weren't intended to stuff in your pocket I just have these because I couldn't resist, I am not a student of them, so I'm sure others know far more about them than I. Well from the short amount of time I got to visit the show, I can say it was good. I finalized the payment on my Fr 351 and picked up 6 additional small size notes for the collection. Four $20's and Two $10's. One was a Forth Worth issued note which has been a thorn in my side trying to find... I'll post some images once I scan them. It was good to meet some folks and I saw Penny Lady, however, she was so busy I did not want to interrupt her to intro myself...Penny Lady, I was the guy you glanced up and smiled at.. Yakpoo called me but he could not make it by the time I had to leave to catch my flight back home...3 days of business there takes it toll for sure. It was a huge show compared to any I have been to before..more coins than notes but the notes section was really nice..could have easily spent 100K if you had that kind of cash on ya...the chicken sandwiches and a diet soda was $13 a pop!! And get this one...for the first time in my coin/currency life I was told this by a Dealer... I was asking about a graded Silver Eagle 2002 in a 68 (he had both a 68 and a 69) he wanted $75 for the 68 and $55 for the 69 and said that these are much harder to come by because of the lower grade.. I walked away saying "I think thats a big ole bunch of ****!" RickieB
Hey Rickie! How was the show? Couldnt make it this year, But would like to See your latest pick-ups, Also did you see any good Mpc ??:hail:
For next year - directly across Baltimore St (north -Charles and Baltimore Sts) is a tall office complex. On the first floor are a few eateries, Subway, another sub place, and Paulino's kind of on an Italian place. At Paulino's I got a very large reasonably good antipasto salad w/ hot buttered bread for $4.99 . I didn't buy a drink because I always take to shows a water bottle about one third frozen water the rest tap water. Lasts me all day. The Baltimore Convention Center has several very large shows (at least a couple of Whitman shows, antiques, crafts, conventions) every year. A cottage industry of carry outs and sit in food places have cropped up around the convention center.
Smart, With the prices they charge for food at shows you could Just about by a new Car....Well maybe not, But you get my point!!
You're right MPC the prices just keep creeping up. Another money saving tip for the Whitman show in June at the Baltimore Convention Center. I had some time and returned to the show today and found 12 hour parking for $10.00 at the Day's Inn a few blocks west of the convention center. Friday I paid $20.00 to park all day in a garage. If anybody's interested I'll google the location of the garage and post it. Maybe others found cheaper parking.
I guess you could always ride your bike!! Interesting story though during the Long Beach shows, Which is the biggest Show on the west coast, Parking was $25 all day right next to the convention Center but they let me park for free when i took my scooter!! I saved $25 On gas compared to using my S.U.V plus the $25 for free parking!! Thats $50 bucks right off the bat!!! What a deal!!
You're always at least one step ahead. That's fifty more bucks to spend on MPC. Do you have windshield wipers on your glasses to wipe of the splattered bugs?
Cheaper Parking Midas -- I defintely will park at the Days Inn. I paid $25 for the lot down the street from the Convention Center. I thought the price way too high. I am used to parking on the other side of town (Fells Point) for $3 on weekends. Thanks for the tip!!
RoslynT, I entered the garage from the Lombard St entrance just past Hopkins Plaza after it crosses Lombard St. After entering the garage there is a sign "Event Parking $10.00 for twelve hours so I assume it's a weekend rate. Hopkins Plaza Days Inn Phone: (410) 576-1000 Toll-Free: 1-800-Days Inn You a Fells Point alumnus? I put in my time there.
Fells Point Midas, Yes I lived in Fells Point for about a year in 2005 - right on the water on Thames. It was awesome! After the show we went to Mezze for lunch and The Horse You Came in On for a drink. Fells was a wonderful and wild place to live and miss it - but I wanted a to buy a place with my own parking spot and cheaper taxes - so I moved to Frederick county. Now I have more disposable income to spend on coins. :thumb:
Fells Point Alumnus You lived on Thames ST? It doesn't get much better than that. Cool. . Haven't made it to Mezze yet but it's still on the list. I think the Horse dates from the 1700s. The last time I was in there the mens room still appeared to date from the early 1900s. I agree with you it's a wild freewheeling live and let live kind of a place. Desperate living for some though. For some of us FP tends to get in the blood. Lost a lot of brain cells in John Stevens, Dead End, Horse, Cat's Eye, et. al.
Book on Gold Coin Hoard found in Baltimore Midas - if you like to read, I have a book to recommend for you. Its called Treasure in the Cellar. Its about two teenaged boys who found a hoard of gold coins in a basement of a Baltimore row house in 1934. Its a very interesting story and was published by the Maryland Historical Society. The house was on Eden Street not too far from FP. Check out my Social Group on here - I have a photo of the book and a review. Its the Social Group with the Red Book as its icon. Here is the author's website. http://treasureinthecellar.com/
