I agree with the 'youth' participation statements....basically, coins are for those with a bit more time and income beyond the usual paycheck to paycheck family requirements.... WOW!! Love that Akanthos coin!!! Well JA, since you posted a Micipsa, I'll post the Numidian example I picked up off a Forum auction:
Although a tetrobol isn't really small, I've discovered that small Greek silver is tough to find at shows. Dealers bring along all the big, popular coins - owls, Alexander tets, etc., at least to Baltimore. NYINC had more choices for the small denominations.
NICE coin show scores JA! never been to a large coin show, and have only been to 6 shows period. here's my grosso... here's tarsos tyche with a countermark...i think it's helios...but not sure (i just have "male head" on my attribution).
Guess I'll pile on too I bought this from @Valentinian a few years ago. I was running a contest on another forum and had ancient coins for the winners. It was hard to choose prizes from my current holdings so I bought an assortment of coins for purposes of the contest and ended up keeping this one . Numidia (North Africa, southwest of Carthage) King Masinissa or his son King Micipsa 203-148 BCE or 148-118 BCE Laureate head left Horse prancing left 26 mm, 11.01 gm Sear 6597 Rare unicorn variant
While I agree that this hobby requires more resources than most people younger than college age typically have I think it is important to plant the seed of interest so that it is there to grow later. I was interested by age 12 and really fascinated while in college. Decade by decade my means increased to where I could buy a few of the types I fell in love with all those years before. The right gift coin plus story could set the stage for a future collector.
As someone who is a younger collector (24) myself, I'd add that a lot of the reason you don't see us at coin shows is that we like using the internet and at least in my case, a lot of coin shows are done during the week and I can't quite justify taking one or more days off for a coin show when there is so much to choose from online and I can look at it 24/7 with no pressure or time limits. I have the disposable income but as someone who has only been at the same job for a few years, what I don't have is a large number of vacation days. I actually do know several young collectors though, as well as several people my age who have said that they're interested after seeing a few that I've shared but don't have the money to buy coins they'd like. Who knows if they'll ever pursue the hobby in the future but there's certainly interest.
We old geezers have enough competition without you young nose-pickers driving-up the prices!! (kids nowadays, eh?!!)
Anther great addition, JA ... => congrats on the bull, lookin' back over its shoulder (hot!!) I have one of those babies to toss into your thread ... hey, your cool new addition seems to have a "rose" above the bull (my example has a couple of fronds above the bull) ... I love types that have sub-types (symbols)
Uh, I'm not sure why you posted the girl with the blindfold and come-hither look, but I'm not complaining. My minor device happens to be the flower of the acanthus shrub, after which the city is named. There are a handful of interesting minor devices on these coins.
