Sorry about your luck today but more auctions are on the way :) I shouldn't have bid on anything but couldn't resist the drool-worthy Staffieri collection of Roman Egyptian coins. I wanted them all. So many interesting and rarely offered types! The catalog is keeper and will be good reference in the future. As usual, CNG was very unthoughtful and scheduled their auction to take place while I was working. The nerve!! :D I had to prebid and I hate hate hate prebidding. I bid on four coins shortly before the end of prebidding last night; was immediately outbid on one. The other three stood, which was potentially bad since I shouldn't be spending money on one coin, much less three. If I'd won them all it would have been bad. Fortunately my top pick stood without contest during the live bidding and I lost the other two, so that worked out really well! I now have a new Roman Egyptian coin with cool pedigree-- and they forgot to mention or didn't notice that it is also illustrated in Emmett :). That's particularly notable because Emmett isn't chock full of plates. Only a smattering of interesting types are shown, scattered about the book. I'm not going to show it until it is in hand. Relative to most of CNG's auctions, the prices realized for the Staffieri section were very tame compared to the estimate, with the average hammer being only 18% above estimate. The estimates did seem rather optimistic though. Only 2 of the 273 lots were unsold. It looks like the Greek section saw tremendous action though. If you are interested in such data, here's a quickie spreadsheet of the results for the Staffieri Collection, with percentage variance from estimate.
