I totally get what your sayin! One pretty lady! I want to get this Gorgeous girl into coins. Any tips? She already thinks looking at quarters is stupid. Any ideas how to get her to like numismatics?(without a dorky approach)
Go for the gold! Silver is shiny but gold has more 'wow' factor! Just don't let her try to use it for jewelry... or your collecting budget for that matter!
I can not afford gold right now. Any other ideas? Remember, One Pretty Lady! A little older than me, but still gorgeous! I want her to like me.
Try something that has a decent amount of variety, like ancients or world coins. People who aren't into numismatics tend to find the idea of collecting one design whose only obvious difference is a date and mint mark to be boring, but they often take at least a minor interest in coins that look cool and different. My girlfriend thinks coins are a waste of money, but even she likes to paw through those bowls of 5 for $1 world coins that you see in flea markets sometimes.
Thanks Gao! I will have to check this out. First I need her to like me. She already calls me darling or Mattie because my name is Matt.
If you look at Roman coins, there are many coins with the Augusta on them. You could maybe get her intereseted that way, let her read about the lives of Roman women. Or go for pretty coins, help her start a topical collection. None of this ever worked for me. My first wife went to an ancient coin show once and DID start getting interested in something, ancient gold jewelry. She got mad when I told her our budgets couldn't support both habits. Maybe thats a reason she is now my ex. Think carefully before you get the girl interested in a hobby you cannot afford. To the OP, I was in the same situation. One good idea would be to bring your coin books to school with you, that way it just looks like you are studying. With your increased knowledge you should do better getting deals in the future. More coin knowledge is never bad. Plus, most universities have a good selection of books on coins. Use your time productively, not just getting your degree!
This chick amazes me! I can afford coins, just not expensive ones often. I have to have her be mine! I will climb Mt. Everest if that's what is takes!
I don't recommend that you take your coins to the college. See if there is a local coin club. Post a note on the bulletin board stating "I have a question about an old rare coin. Does anybody here collect coins". List your college email address. You might find a few friends this way at the school. Borrow books from the ANA library (assuming you are an ANA member). Have fun at college & study for your degree.
You can "feed your need" by staying in touch with this community right here online. You'll never be without support or wanting for friends. Good luck this semester.....
Definitely going to be around here...not sure if I'll bring anything, but I always accumulate change, so that's something I like to go through. Not sure about doing the bulletin board thing because my email has my FULL name in it, so it'd be weird I guess...we'll see what happens. I'll probably accumulate a cheap collection at school, and I'll definitely be reading. I'm an ANA member, but only signed up for online...still useful...thanks for the well wishes too!
slam - this could be a good opportunity to hit some estate sales in your area...stash this coins in the safe deposit box...while your there grab some rolls and hide in the corner of the library...good luck
yes, and if you google map...type in estate sales and they will actually pop up...hey, it could be uncharted for you...even large garage sales are good...lots of people get coins left to them and dont know what to do with them...remember karma, dont crush some older lady...be fair
Don't forget to check out the college library though. I am serious, many have some excellent collections of numismatic books for research. If nothing is up your alley, pursue another alley.
Dude, coins can wait. College is once in a lifetime experience. I partied my ass off and enjoyed the women, the people, and the booze. My advice would be to stop following the roll searching thread, because every big find is gonna make you wanna jump right back into it, which just wouldn't end well. I'd apply for a part-time job at the bank, just for the hell of it. Gotta have cash to buy beer and whatnot. Leave the coins at home for now, get a SDB if you can afford it. Put the hobby on hold for a bit, the coins are not gonna disappear overnight. If anything, prices might rise a bit, but I doubt it would be substantial enough to have an impact on your ability to collect.
I agree with the security problems so no coins if it was me. I would read and study plenty of books and such about them so as to become an ace when you get home to start collecting again. Oh and there's another option...poker parties for small cash...there's lots of change to look thru there Good luck at school and have a great time!
