I got to this site while looking for "Copper State Quarters". While cleaning out my coin bowl I found a 2008 D Arizona State quarter. At first I thought it was some kind of token. Its appearance is that of a new penny, but all its features are that of a quarter. The weight is less than a new clad quarter and its edges are slightly less that a 2015 quarter in good condition. Weight = 84.5 grains (reloading scale) = 5.475 grams. New = 5.67 grams. Edge thickness 2008 = 0.0675" to 0.0670". Verses 2015 = 0.070" to 0.071". Which makes one question did someone "etch" the outer cladding off? Second question is, is this worth anything other than curiosity? This is my first time here. I will upload pictures. Thanks with any help on this, WideGlide80
Weight not low enough to be a double missing clad layers. So I’m going with corrosive damage. Others will chime in soon
At 30X there is no sign of another metal but the copper on the two flat surfaces, or around the rim. Why would anyone do this except to make other people crazy? Thanks.
Can’t tell from the photos but definitely not missing the clad layer. Probably lost and the environment turned it that color. Welcome to CT.
Not an error of any kind. Looks more like environmental. Here's an excellent link: Search Results for “missing clad layer” (error-ref.com)
