I walked into one of my local banks the other day and saw a sign: State Quarter sets: 17.95, etc. etc. etc. Then, at the very bottom, I saw this: Silver Eagles (2001,2002): $17.95 I ran up to the counter and they had just sold out of them. Its definately the best deal I've ever seen on those. Too bad I missed it though. Anybody else's banks done this?
Your bank was selling coins and bullion? How odd...I've never heard of that. And I think $17.95 is just a little over spot too. Keep your eyes open for more, sounds like a good deal on the ASEs. -LTB
Never seen Silver eagles but my bank had every single state and territory in the little cardboard (littleton) things. Thought that it was pretty odd
One of my banks sells rounds, eagles and mint sets at high prices. They said they get them from silvertown.
I feel that with many financial institution struggling currently, they may want to expand their horizons and try a few new ways to make a few bucks. But, I can't see them making much of a profit at $18.
I have never seen a bank selling numismatic or bullion products for profit in my life, and I have lived in many places. I am wondering if there is a specific bank that does this type of activity. TC
The bank I saw doing this was United Community in Cleveland, GA. Its just a hometown bank. I'd never seen them do it before and they had a limited quantity. I went home right afterword and looked up the silver price and it was at $18.04. That puts them roughly at spot so they probably made no profit unless they got them cheap.
Small banks are having a tough time...... ------- Me too. And stuff like this helps bring in deposits and new customers. They don't make anything but they generate lots of good publicity and new accounts. Help them out as they are going the way of the old locally owned Five and Dime in the face of WalMart size competition. ----- And ain't it curious that in the face of all this rhetoric about breaking up banks so that they are no longer 'too-big-to-fail', that what is actually happening is the opposite? The little ones are being crippled, then merged with the giants. 'Curiouser and curiouser'. said Alice.
