This was a fluke/ I ended up waking up at 5:30AM/ so I went on my computer to check out Künker Auction. This was the coll. of Annemarie & Gerdhard Köhlmoos. I noted the auction was on Braunschweig-Lunenburg/ so watched the action. Most coins went 3X estimates. Finally the 1828-B. coin came up....it was described as a prachtexamplar/ fast st./ starting price 1500 euros. It was at 1900 euros/ so I bid 2K and won it. AV 5 Thaler 1828-B. Thanks Mat/ robinjojo I pretty well go by the latter. My coll. spans 27 centuries/ mostly all worldwide/ US. Sometimes, I jump on really good auction deals.
Do you have good luck in not getting 'problem' coins? Do things usually look how you expect quality wise?
So far, I have never been disappointed However, I always keep in mind that a US TPG coin in MS-63/64 would be a vorz-stempelglanz ex. in a Künker auction. Also/ I stay away from TPG "details" coins. John
I think that's a great coin even if it ends up being details. German States gold almost never goes that cheap. FWIW, I got 3 cleaned coins from Kuenker in their last auction out of ~10 I won that were not described as cleaned. The photos were borderline but I gave them the benefit of the doubt since they are a large, respected outfit.
Beautiful coin! I collect German States and German coins for genealogical purposes, but my budget is a blocker for truly exquisite coins.
