Well, here is my teeny-weenie AV 1/4 Fanam (0.10g./3.8mm.) circa 1200AD Western Gangas(Medieval India) Orissa Mint obv. elephant/ rev. floral scroll I hope no one had holes in their pockets back then!
Nope! Its that small!!!!! Too compare here is my "modern" AV 1/32 Dukat 0.11g. 5mm. From Regensburg/German States Franz II of Lorraine undated (1745-65)
Wow! India certainly went to extremes in their coinage. The Mughals struck tiny 1/2 Fanams to the massive 1000 Mohurs (35 pounds of gold)
i didn't know modern european coins came in this size at all...wow. and less than 4 mm ...dang, that's crazy.
John, that 3.8mm can't be right. I measured it on my screen, and it is 10cm! LOL, nice coin! Fun find!
Most amazing is that they were able to strike these tiny coins with such precise designs/ the Regensburg 1/32 Dukat esp., crossed keys/doubleheaded Habsburg Imperial Eagle! And yes, these coins are both "mint state" and were $75US and 250 Euros for Regensburg coin....pretty cheap as Pishpash quoted.
I know the feeling! We poor snooks in Canada have to pay $1.35=$1.00US 1.50= 1.00EURO $1.71=1UK Pound.....I wish I lived in the UK, then I could work with your Pound
Although the Fanams are small, they are pretty coins. Besides, if you like gold they are probably the most affordable type to get. The next ones up usually run upwards of $300.
Sweet coin, panzerman! Where did you find one so detailed? My brother has a couple and they only seem to have a line on them. I would love to have one of these myself. Erin
Erin/ Thanks! You really have to look at lots of auction sites, Baldwins/ The New York Sale/CNG/Kunker/HD Rauch many times have these Fanams in "mint state"
