That sure is a thorough history of eBay and it's influence on the coin market. =)

I didn't realize they had "completed items" back then. I started on ebay around 2005, and they didn't have it then or for the next few years. Back then I had to add an item to my watch list when I saw it, otherwise the only way to find it after it ended was to google similar coins and +ebay or +"ebay feedback" and hope that it showed up.

As a buyer I see your point 110%. But, as a seller I feel that if idiots bid on similar coins, idiots will bid on mine as well. So the price I see makes sense for what I'm planning to sell. The best I can do is send someone a nice bonus coin if I feel they overpaid.

I think this is right for things like Morgan dollars in MS64 where there are hundreds of thousands of examples and they are by and large fungible. For things like early copper, price guides are useful to determine approximate value, but each coin is truly unique and the actual price it brings is entirely based on demand at that moment. Price guides do not hold those coins back at all, go check out the auction archive on goldberg for some examples...

I saw this as well, and was buying in the same period. The only thing I would add would be for ancients I saw this development a little later than for US and world coins. You could still find excellent deals there until 2007 or so on Ebay, then all heck broke loose. Nowadays, I pass on 95% of everything there as either outright junk or well above market price for BIN or starting bid. Of the remaing 5%, I lose 4.9% of them. The only coins I get there now at a good price are either ones I have superior knowledge on, or esoteric items. Other than that, prices are simply out of sight.
