And another 96 NC-4 is found, congratulations. (I'd probably try and make you an offer for it but I already have one.)
I don't know whether to be happy or sad as I set the price on this one. I couldn't really afford my $505 bid, but this was particularly desirable as an extremely rare die state (I) without any evidence of a CUD left of L) of an R4+ variety S-171.) In fact, my search for another only lead me to Noyes use of this coin to show his obverse die state A (Breen I.) This is Noyes 21937. But the odd thing is he does not list it in his condition census which goes down to Net VG10. Even with some dings which aren't too distracting, this should be at least a net F15.
One of the easiest of the 1800s, but also one of the rarest. I have it on good authority that it just makes the condition census for the variety. Anyone want to take a stab?
S-210 Noyes Die State C/F This must be the most common die state and is the same as my three, but all are AG3/Fr2. Key markers are HWH under upright of R/SHWH under upright of E and I rotated clockwise. Confirmed by the die break from just above the JHF and the rim at 3 O'Clock and back through R to the rim above E.
The weakness of the reverse may be partially related to die sinking of the late die state. This Reverse was used with a haphazard pairing of obverse dies. All of the varieties it is used on were used early in the reverse die's life. It is lapped and the right ribbon stem no longer touches the knot which indicates a later use of the reverse die. Many of the lower grades show excessive "wear" for the grade at ONE to OF. Notice both the S-111 and the S-108 show this excessive "wear" and are both later die states as indicated by the disconnected right ribbon stem.
I've run out of money and found another good one. the below is a link to an unattributed S-82 R5. Take a look if you're interested at the price. https://www.ebay.com/itm/263458750739?ul_noapp=true
Wouldn't be an improvement over the one I already have. Besides I'm broke as well. Finished my set of chain cents this past weekend. Picked up an S-1 G-4 Net AG-3.
Thank you for the link, Marshall. I am sure somebody here will be interested in this scarce variety. I was fortunate to find this S-82 many years ago at a very good price.
I always like your finds. I already had one similar to the one on the link. It comes with it's own tomb. It's a straight grade G4, but need a better picture. I would probably argue if I were buying that the reverse is too weak for G4, I have trouble taking good photos through tombs.
Alright, so I finally got around to imaging those new Braided Hair Large Cents of mine and wondered if anybody here has any better idea than I do on their varieties! 1842 1854 1849 I hope this images are good enough to depict which variety they are! Soren.
Late dates are not my strength, but if someone else hasn't helped by the time I'm finished with my house remodeling and have access to my Noyes Late date books, I'll try.
