Better still if the eagle is swooping down to a nest with young chicks in, the eagle representing the strength and courage of the nation raising and guiding the young chicks, (interpret as the older generation upholding American values and guiding the younger generation).

Wasn't that the kind of thing you were all looking for?

Those are some excellent ideas, Sylvester. I've got to hand it to you, you come up with some great sugestions.
I only wish our (US) coinage had some relief to their designs. Without it, they just have no "life" to them.
I hope you don't feel like you need to be careful about expressing your opinions here. I don't think anyone would critisize you for stating what you feel, but you never know. It has happened to me a few times.

Well there's probably loads of better ideas out there, but like you say most of them would be ruined and clipartified (if that's a word!) the joys of low relief coins...

If they make em much lower they'll wear away with a rub.

(feel free to quote me on that in years to come :D )

I just thought i'd better be careful cos i've sensed some bad feeling on this board lately, hasn't affected me at all, but you never know what i might land myself in, if my intial post was to be interpreted wrongly.

I can assure you whilst ever there's a $20 Liberty in existence it won't happen!

I think the eagle reverse on the Sac dollars is pretty nice.

Sylvester, anyone who believes in liberty is cool with me and even if I agree with you on this issue, I have no problem with someone who believes in freedom of thought with disagreeing with me on any other thread.

Jody, I certain respect yours (and other's) opinions, and can see reasonable arguments for both sides of this. Personally, I think our current coinage is somewhat tiresome, and I welcomed the 50 State Quarters and now the new Nickel reverses. I'd like to see the return of lady liberty on circulating coinage, which we have not seen since 1947. I also think it is likely that Washington and Jefferson would have preferred a symbol of liberty and would not have wanted to be depicted on coinage forever, because to them it might give them the "monarch" status they fought so hard to defeat.

That being said, perhaps a compromise would be to keep the cent, nickel, and quarter unchanged, and change the dime and half, both of which were created hastily while a nation mourned Presidents who died in office. And please, no Reagan dime!!! How about a return of Winged Liberty to the dime and put the "Peace Dollar" design on the Half?? The "Peace Half" would complete a "role reversal" with the Walking Liberty bullion dollar.

    hi jody,

i never said that my opinion is right while yours is wrong.

having a picture of a president or any other statesman on our coins and currency is the same as other countries having a monarch on their coins and currency. that would be ok if this country was founded as a monarchy but it wasn't ON PURPOSE. people don't belong on american money. having a person on money these days is a purely political thing. let's put ronnie on a dime even though he's still alive. it's a relief that that idea was put down. virginia wants to make sure that washington's face never leaves the quarter just because he was born there and by golly they're gonna make it a law. why is virginia so afraid of not having washington on the quarter? half the people on our money can't even be identified by school kids. if you want that changed make sure that the kids learn about them in school.

american money should have symbols for freedom and liberty, etc., because it was founded on those principles. if people on money is so damned important, why was lincoln the 1st person to be on regular coinage in 1909?

would you be so adamant about washington being on the quarter if you weren't from virginia?

    Hello aem,

Let me see if I can respond to some of you questions for me.

"Why is Virginia so afraid of not having Washington on the quarter?"

That's a tough one. Are we talking about the Virginia Legislature, or the people that live in Virginia?
Either way, I'm in no position to speak for any of those folks.
As for myself, I'm not afraid of anything that has to do with coinage designs. I have a preferance, that a depiction of Geo. Washington remain on the quarter. I've stated my reasons many times on this forum.

"...why was Lincoln the first person to be on regular coinage in 1909?"

Rather than typing out that story, I will refer you to this web-page:

    1909 - Lincoln Cent (click)

"Would you be so adamant about Washington being on the quarter if you weren't from Virginia?"

I don't really think of myself as being "adament" about the issue. I do care enough to have an opinion, and I state that opinion when the subject is brought up.
I know others on this board have taken steps to see that our coinage is changed. I simply contacted my Congressman to request that he support legislation that Washington remain on the quarter dollar coin.
In short, the answer to your question is "yes".
I was also very disappointed that B. Franklin was removed from the half dollar coin, and replaced with a politician.

In closing, I hope there's no hard feelings, maam. I know there are none on my part.
