This is the Belgian coin issued in 2004. The reason then was the 75th anniversary of the first Tintin story: http://www.muenzenplattform.com/images/catalog/large/37/637.jpg

Europassion may be a little expensive, but I guess it depends on how badly one wants that Asterix coin. ;) As for the Monnaie de Paris mintage policy, I assume nobody wants (or could afford) a complete collection anyway - so they issue dozens of coins (with low mintages each) every year, hoping that collectors may be interested in this or that issue ...

However, the French mint got a new director (PDG) last year, and it seems that there are or will be a few subtle changes. For example, the mint plans to issue a "Marianne" silver €5 coin at face value this year. Whether the €15 silver and €100 gold pieces will also be available at face, I don't know.

By the way, the cartoon characters series from the Monnaie de Paris will be continued this year, with another Belgian-French character - Spirou - who was "born" (well, created) 70 years ago.

The 2007 coin is still available from the mint

Tough to navigate their menus, and they take 3 months to deliver beware!

For about the same price today (49 Euro was $67 when i ordered, now is $79!), you could get it from the Royal Scandinavian Mint in Colorado....

The 2004 Tintin coins are tougher to find...

Spirou was fun, but nothing ever compared to Asterix!!! I can still read an asterix book for the 50th time and find something I missed :)
