I can't seem to get a positive ID for this Greek bronze: Obv: Looks like Apollo, but could be Demeter or nymph? Rev: Bull butting left. Nike or tunny fish above? T above? IΓ monogram in exergue? 20 mm, 6.0g Looks like something from Gambrion in Mysia, but I can't find anything that's 20mm; most are much smaller. Tauromenion, in Sicily has larger bronze coins like these, but they all have obverse and/or reverse inscriptions. Anyone have any suggestions?
That does seems like a match. It looks like there's an obverse inscription on the CNG coin that doesn't appear on mine, but the T on the upper reverse matches up, and what I called an IΓ monogram is probably an IE. When checking for other examples I found that some have an inscription on the obverse and others do not. Could the writing on the obverse be the name of the artist who made the die? Nope. I just checked, and there doesn't appear to be any iron to speak of. But I still think you are both correct about Syracuse and Heirons II. Thank you for your help.
I have one of those, in fact two, and I remember having issues in narrowing down completely. On the example I mentioned the obverse inscription should be ΣYΡAKOΣIΩN My coin's condition doesn't help at all.
My Hieron II has a phi and club above the bull. The obverse city name left of Persephone is weak and obscured by patina specks.
