I use to fly fish with my dad all the time...sadly this was 40 years ago and up north, now shrimping and crabbing is my main salt water catch in FL. I want to get back to fly fishing thou. I fly fished for 10 years. I watched my dad catch a northern pike on a fly rod once, he caught just about anything you can think of fresh water.
...i collect vintage lighters also...my lastest is this 1955-58 Ronson Nordic black & gold marble desk/table model...after seeing one on Perry Mason's desk(his is solid color later model)...i hadda get one too!
Sorry. I'm a little too young for that . I was probably still waiting "Leave it to Beaver " in the mornings . . I meant re-runs .
Sorry, @Alegandron, what I meant was, is the author any relation to the composer? ...For one instance, there's a recent novelist, Joanna Trollope, who, in her blurbs (as far as I ever got), acknowledges a relatively distant family relation to the Victorian novelist, Anthony Trollope. I always found it refreshing that she didn't just keep her public in suspense about it. ...That's where I was going.... Are you doing some of your certified, Autism-Spectrum-Proof humor here? Because if you were, I think you just set a new record!!! :<}
I am not sure. I read the jacket, because I had the same thoughts. He lives / is from the London area. If you enjoy SciFi, the book is actually pretty good. It copyrighted in 2015, and recently won an Arther C Clarke Award. Here is his Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adrian_Tchaikovsky Nuttin ‘bout the Russian composer...
I have been lurking for a while on this site, this is my second post, and I do want to complement the correspondents and founder(s) for an interesting and enlightening web site. Everyday I learn something new from the site. I realize that as a new member I'm a little late coming to this party. Still, to add to the original question about hobbies besides coin collecting. Hobbies that are pretty much dormant are collecting gems and minerals (takes up too much room), Inuit art (early pieces from the 1950s and 1960s have gotten very hard to find), and wine (takes up a lot of space and I rarely drink anymore because of medications). Active interests in addition to coins are signed crew covers, medals, and crew patches associated with the exploration of outer space with a particular focus on Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and the early days of Shuttle program. I also have some signed covers from the Soviet and Chinese programs. In the field of numismatics I am working on a US type set, a set of the classic commemoratives and a century collection with a goal of procuring an example of a coin minted from each century as far back as I can go. I did just pick up an Athenian Owl so I am getting close to the beginning. I do wander from my collecting goals if I see some something of interest, for example, British Trade Tokens and pieces I find attractive or historically interesting. I also have a fairly sizeable library on all the areas in which I have/had a hobby interest. Due to Covid-19 and retirement I got back into coin collecting. Aside from the joys of collecting the requirements for storing a coin collection are miniscule compared to my other hobbies and as I age the thought of downsizing is ever present. Be well, stay safe, stay strong. Tall Paul
I am also a caver. (Spelunker can be used as well). I love to dig open underground passages to find virgin cave. My avatar picture is a passage I dug out with some friends. It is now over 200 feet long. The roof is nice bedrock so there's no chance of a cave-in.
Small world @Victor_Clark looks like Cousin Empson was on the other side of the battle at Chikamauga as my Great Great Uncle John Martin Pealer where He was shot in the lung and lost His life.
Just courious what area you live in? I am in central Fl and I go to local flea markets and atuff and see space items all the time. Its crazy what you will find even in the local junk/thrift shops.
I got into photography after Viet Nam and was fortunate to have a friend who worked full time for what use to be United Press International as a sports photographer. He needed help one day with coverage of a Golf tournament (formerly the GGO) in Greensboro, NC. He knew I played golf avidly and figured I would have some insight into when to take pics etc. that encounter led to MANY tournament assignments and I was very fortunate to cover the MASTERS 3 times, and several NCAA tournaments and finals. Now my photo activities have gone by the wayside and I spend time playing golf and collecting coins. My most recent acquisition was a raw 1909 S VDB purchased from an individual that had 2 old folgers coffee cans full of IHPs and wheaties that as he tells me was sitting in his garage for approx 15years. I paid for them and when I told him what I found and offered to pay him what I thought would be fair he simply said by me lunch at the club and we're even. Needless to say he had a great lunch and I'm still smiling ☺ Stay safe Semper Fi
