i bought a new silver eagle today for $26.80, but first the guy gave me a 2001, he wanted the same price for it too, i said ill just take a new one. on the way home i thought, crap, i think i should have gone with the 2001. are silver eagles worth more the older they get? or how does it work with that? i know the 1994 are worth more, i think anyway. anybody got any info on this.
Age has no effect on the price of ASEs. The spot price of silver, supply and demand are the driving forces of ASE prices.
The older ones/low mintage ones go for more than the 2013s on Ebay. 1996's go for the most as that is the lowest mintage year. Just check Ebay completed listings to get an idea. On september 21st, a roll of 1996 silver eagles sold for $1200, $60 a coin. On september 20th, a roll of 1995 silver eagles sold for $860, $43 a coin. For 1994's I see completed listings of anywhere from $525-$800 for a roll. The last completed listing for a roll of 1986 silver eagles is $722, $36 a coin. Ebay prices are a bit inflated though, and if you are going to sell you have to remember you'll probably receive about 10-12% less after fees, unless you set up a store/have a good seller rating.
1998-1997-1996-1995-1994 were the only years with mintages under 5 million for the bullion coins. 1996 was the only year with under 4 million with 3,603,386 minted that year. oh ok, thanks for the info. i did see a 1996 at a antique shop in town, is was 32 bucks. maybe ill pick it up. would be good just have one of them. hey whats the weight on silver eagles. they should be 31.1 right, the one i got today weighs 31.4. is this no big deal. are they allowed to weigh alittle more like that. whats the tolerance in their weight. like say one weighed 31.9, would that then lean towards a false one??
31.1-31.4 is about where they should be. 31.2-31.3 is most common I think. Also depends on what type of scale your using, it could potentially just be off a tenth of a gram or two.
ok thanks. yea i weighed it there on his scale, i def gotta get one of my own. i trust him cause he owns a jewelery shop and it would get him in alot of trouble if he sold fake ones. i would prob never buy eagles from the internet just cause i can drive 15 mintues and get what i know is a real one. the price is the same anyhow. ive been trying to train my brain to not buy silver just cause its pretty. i would rather have any silver that i know is real than a pretty fake peice. i guess sites like provident and a few others is safe.
It's hard to believe that when Silver Eagles first started you could buy them for what $6 to $7 each.
