My daughter uses Facebook to sell used children’s clothes and related items. Most of the time it’s Drop Off/Pick Up transaction. She leaves the items on the porch and payment is in a envelope. This time it the payment ($5.00) was a ziplock bag full of change. She is familiar with the Ike, but has never seen an ASE. I explained they are technical legal tender, but are made not to be spent, but as a collecter item. She gave it to me, to put in my collection. Awesome daughter!!
Yup. There are a few on this board that operate misc stores and they get Morgan, ASEs and other things as payment once in a while for Face Value.
My bank buddy often see this sort of thing. When grandma passes, the old change that was in her jewelry box simply goes to the bank. Why would a non-collector do otherwise?
Worst I ever heard of came from a casino. My sister relayed the story to me, (she was able to buy a few). A lady came in with hundreds of dollars in Capped Bust/Liberty Seated halves and wanted to cash them in the cage. The cashier told her she would get much more from a dealer, but the lady told her "I know, but I want to piss my husband off". The cage allowed all employees to purchase four of them each for face value.
That situation might not be over yet. I would bet those were part of a collection and when the owner discovers its missing and someone in the household bought a Facebook trinket with them your daughter might get a knock on the door. I would be sure she still had the silver eagle to give back to that angry father.
