He's reminiscent of Bob Johnson - a capable numismatist who chose a less-reputable path at some point.

Bob Johnson is the poster child by over-grading and selling coins in his own plastic clown suits. (love that term you coined Dave ;))

I like the size, feel ,and look of an Accugrade slab .
Having just purchased that Canadian1891 5 cent silver I had one comment stating that these were over graded. Well I'v seen misgraded coins to the plus and minus from every TPG! I have purchased more raw coins in my years than graded...that said I always buy the coin ...unless the coin is in a slab I happen to like...as well to what is in the slab.
I find the Anacs old soap bars and the Accugrade slabs more apealing to my liking.
Look at a coin in an Accugrade slab you really can see the coin a lot better then most other slabs.

If you weren't a collector back then or haven't done the deep dive, you won't understand the vitriol about to be unleashed.

I just can't imagine a franchise model being a good idea for a grading company. One of the biggest problems with franchisees is maintaining a consistent standard of quality across the entire organization.

I found this legal case: Naughton v. Hager, 1992. I'm just amazed people continue to put trust in Hager. Suing customers and potential customers, like Hager did in 2004, is generally a good way to ensure people won't want to be a customer in the future. ...like.. He sued the internet and lost. It looks like he is the mastermind currently putting those ugly (<-subjective to opinion) "90% fbl" and (might be)"dmpl" stickers on slabs (MACge). It also appears he was most definitely our very own crazy 11c, he who shall not be named, guy.

What did Bob Johnson (centsles) do? ...if anything it looks like he was just another victim of Hager.

Actually, somebody else claims to be the president of Macbabble (or whatever it's called). He said in a published interview that he knew of AHs history, but he needed a numismatist and he was the one available.

Just checked in to see how things are on this forum. glad to see the discussing going on. I guess in 2 1/2 years since I started this thread I would guess I have many more to show but no new franchise slabs.

Oh, @Robert Paul, lots more, just haven't posted them here.

Found an "Accugrade #59" Friday at the ANA show. I've seen several of the 91s and 65s on eBay, but never a 59 before.

A CCC (Accugrade licensee) and a "SWINEHART NUMISMATICS" (pair showed up on eBay three months ago).

Thanks, I know the feeling, Just been busy with life.
Sorry I don't have the slab book so I don't know all the different types out there. Keep hoping I will find one someday, missed one a few years back but I hear the ANA library has one for lone.

Yes, @Conder101's book (2001) is available to borrow from the ANA library.

The 2nd edition (2016) of David Schwager's Sample Slab book is still available (last few copies) in print and in pdf form.

Mike focused mostly on physical slabs and then on the major differences in labels. David on samples (broadly, includes show, lunch, etc.)

While Mike worked with Alan Hagar on the ACG section, a lot has come to light in the 15 years and memory was clearly incorrect even then.

For example, Accugrade PhotoSlab Samples. Mike doesn't list ANY Accugrade (ACG) samples in his book.

Cameron Kiefer went so far as to contact Alan Hagar http://www.sampleslabs.com/acg.html (this would have been mid-2003 when the page was first spidered at SampleSlabs - right after the domain was registered):

Alan Canavan (http://coinauctionshelp.com/Coin_Help_Blog/rare-sample-slabs-the-sample-slabs-to-look-for/) and David both repeat this. AlanC:
    And David:

    But they do exist...
